Disney Continues to Push Live-Action “Little Mermaid”

The original Little Mermaid (1989) film is easily one of Disney’s most beloved animated films. Not only has the movie been entertaining audiences for generations now, but the movie also has great cultural significance.

The Original Little Mermaid Saved the Disney Movie Genre!
At the time of the original Little Mermaid’s release, audiences’ interest in movie musicals was heavily waning. But when this defiant mermaid swam onto the big screen, coupled with Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s amazing music, the movie musical genre was suddenly revitalized.
It’s also worth mentioning that the original Little Mermaid kicked off the era known as the Disney Renaissance. In a way, the film’s success lead to some of the most beloved animated films of all time, such as Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), etc.

Disney Fans Owe a Lot to the Original Little Mermaid…
In short, we owe a lot to the original Little Mermaid. So, it goes without saying that the new Little Mermaid (2023) film had some big shoes to fill (or should we say ‘fins?’).
Although the Little Mermaid remake is shaping up to be one of the most well-received live-action remakes in Disney’s arsenal, it still pales in comparison to the original for many fans.
As a result, the Walt Disney Company is doing everything in its power to keep the film relevant. Recently, we reported on how Walt Disney World has permanently replaced the 1989 version with the 2023 version, but it doesn’t end there.

Walt Disney Company Continues Pushing Live-Action Little Mermaid
Release dates for the new Little Mermaid’s DVD and digital release were revealed last month, but something was noticeably missing: a Disney Plus (stylistically Disney+) release was missing. Now, we finally know.
The Little Mermaid remake is finally swimming onto Disney+ on September 6. Check out the trailer here:
This reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairytale stars Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel, Jonah Hauer King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as the evil Sea Witch Ursula, and Javier Bardem as King Triton.
