The new live-action movie brings new actors and new scenes to the plate as they re-imagine this Disney classic.
Halle Bailey in The Little Mermaid Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
With Disney's trend of turning animated classics into live-action movies, The Little Mermaid was the newest movie to step up to the plate. Ariel, a young mermaid princess, has a fascination with the human world as she finds their objects littering the bottom of the sea in scattered shipwrecks.
She gets close to a ship one night right before disaster strikes and saves the young human Prince Eric on board it. Ever since this rescue, Ariel's human fascination begins to turn into romantic feelings for him, and Eric longs to find the girl who rescued him. Her evil Aunt Ursula is willing to help unite them again for a price.
The Little Mermaid is currently set for a September 6, 2023, release date on Disney+. It has been through some rough stages, as even before the movie was released it had generated a lot of backlash for certain announced changes, mainly the casting choice for Ariel. Many were upset that Halle Bailey was chosen, claiming she wasn't close enough to the original animation to make it even worth seeing.
However, she definitely proved her worth when the movie was released, showing us that anyone can be a princess, but more importantly, that Bailey can be Ariel.

The Grotto's Destruction
Halle Bailey as Ariel with Flounder Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
When King Triton gets suspicious of Ariel's disappearances, and Sebastian accidentally reveals her trip to the surface, he gives up the location of her grotto. When she arrives and tries to defend herself, Triton decides to teach her a lesson by destroying the grotto and most of the items she's collected inside of it.
It's a tragic moment that is only highlighted by Bailey's acting as she desperately tries to save her collection and make her father understand. The moment also helps us see just why Ariel would be willing to turn to Ursula to get the feet she wants so she can get onto land and find Prince Eric again.

Eric's Shipwreck
Ariel saving Eric as they wash up on shore Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
When Ariel first surfaces, it's as she is chasing Eric's ship. While it gives her a look at humans for the first time, it also takes a turn for the worst as the ship catches on fire and crashes up against the rocks. As everyone began to abandon ship, Ariel remained close by, her kind heart offering subtle help. This includes giving Max a gentle push-up into the rowboat as he doggy paddles through open water, and, of course, saving Prince Eric when he doesn't make it to the rowboats.
Throughout the whole scene, as well as the scene after with Eric on the beach, Bailey brings her best as we know Ariel would get in so much trouble just for saving a life, and yet she doesn't hesitate. We get to see her recreate the iconic rock scene too where she is longing for Eric, complete with the dramatic waves, which makes the whole scene that much better.
8
The Shark Attack
Ariel and Flounder show Scuttle the dinglehopper Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Ariel shows her mettle more in this movie than in the original. When the shark attacks her and Flounder in their search through a shipwreck, the scene is a lot more intense than the animated one, as Bailey actually helps us feel the tense emotions as she's running away and trying to save Flounder and herself.
We also get to see Ariel's smarts at this moment too, as instead of just getting the shark stuck in the hoop of an anchor, she tricks him with the reflection from a mirror, hiding off to the side, so the shark would attack the reflection, get stuck, and allow her and Flounder to escape in the other direction. Bailey does a great job of conveying all of this at the moment, and even keeping calm enough while swimming for her life to be able to think of a trick like that in the first place.
7
A New Song on Shore
Halle Bailey as Ariel on the rock Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Many of the musical remakes don't only include old songs, but add a few new ones to make the versions differ more from each other. One such song is For The First Time, a narration from Ariel as she experiences a lot of firsts on land, transporting her from the transformation in the sea up into the castle. It's also her trying to learn how to walk on her feet instead of swimming.
Not only is it a great transition piece, but Bailey does a great job bringing the song to life, as well as showing us Ariel's reaction to experiencing all these firsts. No one but a mermaid could truly show so much joy and wonder at some of the most mundane parts of human life.
6
The Final Battle
Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Halle Bailey as Ariel Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
One thing that we still got to see is Ursula take Triton's power and grow to towering heights. Her demise was met with the broken tip of a ship as well — but the finer details don't all match up. Instead of terrorizing the merfolk, Prince Eric is her main target after he hit her with a harpoon. Ariel is desperate to keep both of them alive, and while Ursula is distracted, she takes the opportunity to climb up onto one of the shipwrecks the whirlpool has uncovered.
Bailey shows us just how desperate Ariel is at this moment as she literally crawls across the deck and up to the wheel to turn it right into Ursula's side. It's a great final battle, and a great homage to the original while still giving Ariel the power to save herself.
5
Fighting For Her Voice
Halle Bailey as Ariel in the sand Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
In another similar but changed scene from the original, Eric and Vanessa intend to marry in the palace courtyard, and aren't out at sea. This just gives Ariel a longer chance to interrupt and break the spell on Eric. She completely attacks Vanessa now that she knows it's Ursula, and despite not being able to say why, no one is really able to stop her.
Because of her taking this action, she is able to tear the shell necklace off of Ursula herself and shatter it on the ground, releasing her voice and returning it to herself once more. It's a powerful moment for Ariel to realize the deception for herself and Bailey does a great job showing us the fight to take her life back into her own hands.
4
Ariel's Day in the Town
Ariel and Eric sneaking back into the palace Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
On Ariel and Eric's day out of the castle, Ariel gets to experience what an average day in the life of a human is like. While experiencing the culture of the kingdom and seeing a cameo of Ariel's original voice actor, there is no doubt that she is having the time of her life thanks to Bailey's acting.
The bright colors and fabrics, the tantalizing food, and even the music draw her further into the market. Of course, this means she pulls Eric along too, helping him see the kingdom in a new light and actually enjoy his day as they dance together. Bailey helps make the moment better by showing us how Ariel is falling in love with her new life as a human, as well as with Eric.
3
First Time Seeing the Surface
Halle Bailey as Ariel with Sebastian Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Despite Ariel's love for the human trinkets she collects, she has never once been to the surface of the ocean. She has been close, but as Scuttle is now a bird that can come underwater, she has never gone up into the air before. This makes her first time going up to the surface even more impactful.
It's a stark contrast from the sudden darkness and chaos the intriguing ship brings to the water, but as she reaches out for the surface and finally pokes her head through, we discover it's just a beautiful fireworks display for Eric's birthday. This is the moment she's dreamed of, and as she continues to watch the ship and its occupants, Bailey really shows us the wonder of the once-in-a-lifetime experience.
2
Ariel and Eric Reading Maps
Ariel and Eric looking over the maps Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Some of the new content this movie brings is expanding upon Ariel and Eric's relationship. In fact, Eric seems just as interested in the sea as Ariel is with the humans, even going as far as to have an entire room of artifacts he has collected that mimics her underwater grotto. As they begin to get to know each other, Ariel and Eric sit side by side as they pull open some of his maps.
Despite Ariel currently being mute, Bailey does a great job showing her excitement and interest in the topic as she points to different areas on the map, listens to Eric's explanation, and then hurriedly sprawls a new map across the desk once they finish the previous one. The new scene, plus the great acting, really helps show us how the couple falls in love, rather than the thought that Eric might only love Ariel for her voice.
1
Part of Your World
Halle Bailey as Ariel in her grotto Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Since Part of Your World is Ariel's signature song, and one of the most recognizable from the movie, there were a lot of expectations for it. Luckily, Bailey lived up to all of our expectations and more. Not only does she have a beautiful voice that helps carry her version of the song, but her acting really touches your heart. You can feel her longing when you watch and listen, and can understand why she wants to get away from her world.
Unlike the animated version, this all happens before she's seen Eric, so we really understand she's fallen for the humans and human culture overall before her crush on Eric can develop and help push her even further towards the shore.
