Its success on Disney+ follows a strong theatrical run this summer. The movie—which was directed by Rob Marshall and opened over Memorial Day weekend to $118.6 million in North America—was one of the top five highest-grossing films of the summer domestically with nearly $300 million.
The Little Mermaid—which also stars Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, and Awkwafina—is also among 2023’s top ten films worldwide to date, earning $570 million at the global box office.
The film was praised by audiences who gave it an “A” CinemaScore and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Source: movieweb.com/the-little-mermaid-records-disney/The Little Mermaid Is Already Breaking Records On Disney+ BY MACA REYNOLDS PUBLISHED 2 HOURS AGO The Little Mermaid didn't have the best performance at the box office, but is now doing much better on Disney+.
Halle Bailey in The Little Mermaid Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
SUMMARY Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid is finding greater success on Disney+ than it did in theaters. Despite its success on Disney+, the controversy surrounding the remake, including the casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel, continued long after the movie's release. The Little Mermaid is currently ranked the seventh most popular movie of 2023.
The latest Disney live action remake, The Little Mermaid, has already left behind most movie theaters around the world, and has since landed on the small screen courtesy of Disney+, where it is enjoying greater success than it enjoyed on the big screen. After years in development, the live-action remake of the 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid finally made its way to theaters earlier this year. Controversy always surrounded the project, with fans claiming it was not necessary to make a new version of the film, and social media entering into a strong debate when Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel. A discussion that lasted until long after the movie was released.
According to Box Office Mojo, The Little Mermaid has grossed more than $298 million dollars at the domestic box office, reaching a total of $569 million worldwide, which are pretty good numbers considering the approximate budget of $250 million. The film is currently ranked as the seventh most popular movie of 2023, and it seems like after landing at the streaming platform things are only getting better for it.
After the debut of the film on Disney+ on September 6, the House of Mouse revealed that it has become one of the most watched movies on the platform, reaching 16 million views in its first five days. This is a huge accomplishment considering The Little Mermaid is competing with titles like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Avatar: The Way of Water, both of which were smashing hits at the box office.
The Little Mermaid is directed by Rob Marshall, and stars Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina Jacob Tremblay, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy.
The Flash Is Also Doing Better On Streaming
Despite the great numbers of some productions like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Little Mermaid or Elemental, Disney didn't have its best year at the box office, with some setbacks like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However, on the other side of the road, things are even worse.
Warner Bros. Pictures is enjoying the enormous success of Barbie, but before Greta Gerwig's box office saving title the studio suffered from some major failures with Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash. The film, directed by Andy Muschietti, also debuted on streaming a few days ago, and is trying to recover from the poor reception it had while in theaters.
The movie ended its theatrical run grossing $268 million dollars, which is really low for such a high budget film and a comic book adaptation based on one of the most popular characters from DC Comics. Fortunately, it is performing a lot better on Max.
According to Whip Media, The Flash is currently at the second spot on the Top 10 of most watched movies in the US. These numbers are from the weekend between September 1st and September 3rd, which is a great performance considering it premiered on Max on August 25. The first spot is occupied by Adam Sandler's You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, which is becoming one of the actor's most successful films.

Source: geekculture.co/the-little-mermaid-live-action-remake-is-disney-plus-biggest-premiere/‘The Little Mermaid’ Live-Action Remake Is Disney+’s Biggest Premiere A'bidah ZaidSeptember 12, 20232 min read
After making a splash at the box office back in May this year, The Little Mermaid has swum to become the biggest premiere on streaming service Disney+.
The Little Mermaid premiered on the streamer on 6 September and garnered 16 million views in its first five days, beating out previous record holder Hocus Pocus 2. Disney+ did not reveal how many views Hocus Pocus 2 received but shared that it measures a view as a total stream time divided by runtime.
It is worth noting that The Little Mermaid had a theatrical release prior to swimming home to Disney+ while Hocus Pocus 2 did not. The casting of 23-year-old Black actress Halle Bailey as the titular character Ariel caused a stir amongst racist fans and changes to song lyrics did create unhappiness amongst certain viewers. Nonetheless, The Little Mermaid still debuted with success at the box office.
the little mermaid
The movie premiered in theatres over the Memorial Day weekend with US$118.6 million domestically and beat out competitor Fast X (US$67.5 million) out of its No.1 spot. The Little Mermaid finished its theatrical run with over half a billion dollars globally.
The movie’s success could be due to the positive word of mouth and honest reviews from critics (you can read our review here). The beloved nature of the 1989 animated original surely played a role too. Geek Culture even named it as one of the best Disney live-action remakes of all time. Given the splash it made at the box office, it is no surprise that The Little Mermaid made waves on Disney+ as well.
Sharing audience data is something Disney+ only started doing recently. Last month, the House of Mouse reported that the premiere episode of Ahsoka collected 14 million views, making the Star Wars series No.1 Worldwide on the platform.
The Little Mermaid is now out on Disney+.

ENTERTAINMENT The Little Mermaid breaks streaming record on Disney+ I wanna be where the people are — and apparently, they're all on Disney+ watching The Little Mermaid By Meg Walters
12 September 2023
We know what we're watching tonight: Disney's new live action adaption of The Little Mermaid.
The Little Mermaid dropped on Disney+ on September 6 and in the past five days, the film has broken streaming records on the platform — according to Disney, the film has already been watched a staggering 16 million times.
The adaptation is a spin on the classic 1989 Disney animated feature. In the live action remake, Ariel (Halle Bailey) makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) to trade her fish tail for a pair of legs in order to meet Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King). The only catch? She has to give up her voice. Just like the original, the live action remake tells the love story between Ariel and Eric — but unlike the animated version, the new Little Mermaid expands upon their story and even features a few new songs. Plus, the remake manages to modernise the famous mermaid for a contemporary audience — we love to see it.
Disney
This streaming record comes after a successful theatrical run in cinemas. The film made £5 million in its first weekend in the UK, per Variety. Over all, it racked up around £27 million at the box office.
The news of The Little Mermaid's streaming record also comes in the midst of a major strike in Hollywood that has seen writers and actors picketing, calling for fairer practices, including a more equal distribution of streaming profits.
Disney
If the streaming figures, The Little Mermaid is proving to be one of Disney's most popular live remakes. It's a great sign that people are more than ready to embrace more diverse casting choices in future remakes of the classics.
After all, it's high time Disney embraced diverse representation. As Halle Bailey told GLAMOUR US earlier this year, it really does matter to young children who watch the films.
“When I saw [the stills from the film] for the first time, I just cried…I was sobbing uncontrollably. The fact that these babies are looking at me and feeling the emotions that they’re feeling is a really humbling, beautiful thing,” Bailey said. “I know how much [seeing Anika Noni Rose playing The Princess and the Frog] changed my whole perspective on life. Wow, this is possible. Black princesses are possible. We deserve to take up these spaces too."
Hopefully, this is a sign that the majority of people are willing to be — well — normal about it!
Disney
If you're craving more live action Disney, you're in luck. The production company has a number of classic remakes already in the works, including Moana, Hercules, Bambi, The Aristocats, Robin Hood and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Next up, there's Rachel Zegler's version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, which, once again, promises to be a modern take on the classic fairy tale — and despite some weird backlash, we honestly cannot wait.
The Little Mermaid is now streaming on Disney+.

Source: mashable.com/article/little-mermaid-disney-streaming-record'The Little Mermaid' is Disney+'s most streamed film premiere yet The live-action remake gained 16 million views within its first five days. By Amanda Yeo on September 12, 2023
Disney has proudly declared that its recent remake of The Little Mermaid racked up 16 million views within its first five days on Disney+, defining "views" by the total stream time divided by the film's runtime. According to the company, the live-action musical starring Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy is now the streaming service's most viewed film premiere since Hocus Pocus 2 late last year.
Released in theatres on May 26, The Little Mermaid is a live-action reinterpretation of the 1989 film of the same name, featuring new songs and tweaked lyrics. Disney's appeal to nostalgia already paid off at the box office, with The Little Mermaid earning $570 million globally during its run. This made it one of the highest grossing films in 2023 thus far.
Now it seems as though that popularity has translated into Disney+ streaming numbers, no doubt helped by millions of children enchanted by life under the CGI sea.
Disney has historically been coy about streaming viewership numbers, typically declining to share the data on its original productions. However, it seems as though the House of Mouse is willing to bend that policy if the numbers are impressive enough — and perhaps to attract potential advertisers.
While Disney+ was ad-free at launch, the introduction of an ad-supported tier last December has likely made the company more amenable to the idea of sharing its streaming numbers, or at least the good ones. Last month Disney announced that the first episode of its original Star Wars series Ahsoka drew 14 million views, making it the most popular series on the streaming service during the week of its premiere. There were no such joyous announcements after Disney+'s April premiere of Peter Pan & Wendy.
The release of these numbers also brings the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes back to the fore.
One of the issues driving the strikes has been the push for better sharing of residuals from streamed productions. In particular, both unions have demanded that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) establish viewership-based residuals, allowing writers and performers a share in the success of popular productions. The WGA also specifically demanded "transparency regarding program views." The AMPTP has rejected these demands.
However, Disney's declaration of The Little Mermaid's popularity serves as a reminder that the company could very easily release the numbers that striking writers are requesting — if it wanted to.

Disney Plus ovviamente propone tanti altri contenuti oltre a La Sirenetta.

Source: screenrant.com/the-little-mermaid-2023-disney-plus-debut-numbers/Disney Releases The Little Mermaid Disney+ Viewership Data, Reveals One Of 2023's Biggest Hits BY NATHAN GRAHAM-LOWERY PUBLISHED 16 HOURS AGO The Little Mermaid has swam onto Disney+ and earned one of the streamer's best movie debuts despite its mixed box office performance over the summer.
Halle Bailey as Ariel in The Little Mermaid
SUMMARY Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid had a strong debut on Disney+, attracting 16 million views in its first five days on the streaming service. Despite facing obstacles during its theatrical run, the film's streaming success could make up for its underperformance and potentially influence future productions. The Little Mermaid's Disney+ release could help it become more successful than its original run, gaining a strong audience and increasing support for its home release and merchandise.
Despite receiving a mixed reception at the box office, 2023's live-action The Little Mermaid scores one of Disney+'s best debuts. Disney's remake of their 1989 animated adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's beloved fairy tale starred Halle Bailey as the mermaid princess Ariel, who becomes fascinated with those who live on land and makes a deal to earn legs of her own. While The Little Mermaid is the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2023, it received a mixed reception from critics and fell short of meeting box office expectations.
With The Little Mermaid hitting Disney+ on September 6, The Walt Disney Company revealed that it has quickly secured one of the strongest viewership debuts for the service to date. In a statement, Disney announced the movie attracted 16 million views across its first five days on the streaming service. The viewership numbers establish The Little Mermaid as one of the strongest film debuts since Hocus Pocus 2 in September 2022, which previously held the record for the service's biggest premiere.
The Little Mermaid's Streaming Performance Could Make Up For A Troubled Summer Theatrical Run
Halle Bailey as Ariel is looking through a telescope in The Little Mermaid.
The Little Mermaid faced a number of obstacles during its initial theatrical run, despite its trailers earning more views than the studio's other live-action remakes. For many filmgoers, The Little Mermaid faced the difficult task of overcoming expectations set by the original movie. Furthermore, it was released in a packed summer period that saw Disney face multiple high-profile struggles at the box office, with audiences choosing to see other, more original movies.
However, with it becoming more widely available to watch on streaming, The Little Mermaid's Disney+ release could help it become more successful than it was during its original run. Should The Little Mermaid find a strong audience on streaming, viewers may be more keen to support its home release as well as its surrounding merchandise. Furthermore, viewership numbers could convince higher-ups at Disney how much they should continue to invest in upcoming live-action remakes.
With The Little Mermaid underperforming during its theatrical run, many within both Disney and the industry have been keen on seeing whether it could have a second chance on streaming. It is clear from its strong Disney+ debut that there is still a curiosity in the movie, whether audiences saw it in theaters or not. As such, while Disney has a number of remakes currently planned, The Little Mermaid's streaming performance could inform future productions.
