This quote reminds the viewers that even if they get it wrong a lot, they can still step up to the plate and get it right when the chips are down. This line reminds viewers that, like Scuttle, it's important to trust themselves when it really counts. Even if others are dubious or don't think they can be trusted, trusting one's self is a crucial part of success.
In the 2023 version of the story, Scuttle is a female and not a seagull, but the personality of the bird (and many of the bird's lines) remains the same. Scuttle even has this same line when trying to tell Ariel and Sebastian that Vanessa is really Ursula. Despite Scuttle's many mistakes about what different human items, like forks, are really for, Scuttle is a true friend who is always going to tell the truth if able to.

Sebastian is the long-suffering advisor to King Triton. Though he wants to help the king, he ends up relegated to being Ariel’s supervisor. Initially, he believes in Triton’s strict hold on his youngest daughter. Lines like this one are in agreement with the King, showing Triton that he understands why the King doesn’t want to bend.
Interestingly, this line has two different beginnings in the Disney movies. In the animated movie, Sebastian says, “Teenagers, give them an inch…” In the live-action version, however, he says “children” instead of teenagers. It’s a way of reminding the audience that Ariel is younger than she might appear to them. Though she is making a lot of her own decisions and growing up, Sebastian and Triton still see her as a little mermaid.

Ursula may be the bad guy of this tale, but on the whole, she has some inspirational facets to her. For one, Ursula never apologizes for who she is. She does her best to live her life the way she thinks is right and, even if some people complain, it's no skin off her tentacles.
There's no explanation in either of the movies as to why Ursula is banished, or just what makes her decide to get revenge on Triton. Plenty of fans have their theories, and Melissa McCarthy's take on the character after playing her in live-action is that Ursula is misunderstood. Ursula lives most of her life in isolation, thought of as evil by her people, so it's entirely possible that McCarthy is right and her revenge scheme has more to it.

Eric’s interest in “uncharted waters” is seen as something that could get him into trouble. His mother thinks he’s undertaking adventures needlessly. While Eric does have that love for adventure and that pull to the sea, he also points out that his adventures aren’t for selfish reasons.
Every time Eric pushes farther out on the ocean away from his home, he reaches out to the people who live in the new places he visits. His rooms are full of items from his travels, but his mind is also full of how his thirst for adventure can help his home. He trades with other cultures and sees how they’ve made progress in their communities to bring their ideas for innovation back home. It’s one of the many ways the live-action version of The Little Mermaid improves on Eric’s character.

Even stubborn Sebastian learns he has to let go by the end of The Little Mermaid. In this iconic line, his transformation from overly stressed, grumpy guardian, to a true friend and caring figure in Ariel's life is complete.
This line summarizes what the whole movie is about and is truly meaningful, both inside the movie and out. Everyone needs to be able to find their own path, strict rules and constraints will not end in anyone's happiness.

Sir Grimsby is employed by Queen Selina in the live-action movie to keep an eye on Prince Eric in much the same way that Sebastian is tasked with keeping track of Ariel. Grimsby is as much Eric’s friend as he is Selina’s employee though, which is why he’s able to say things like this to Eric.
Grimsby sees Eric’s thirst for adventure first-hand because he accompanies the prince on his adventures. He also understands Selina’s fear of losing Eric at sea because of Eric being found in the remnants of a shipwreck of a child. Eric appears to have no fear at all, but Grimsby knows that sometimes, he needs to show a little restraint.

This one is a beautiful line. It reminds viewers to open their eyes to what is real in their lives. Fantasies are nice and having visions of what one thinks they might want is a natural part of life, but holding onto those fantasies when there is a reality before them is foolish.
Instead, embracing the people who are really in one's life, those who are loving, gentle, and kind, is a much better path to take. Clinging to notions of people and things that don't truly exist will only lead to people missing the most wonderful things that are already in front of them. This line is a true inspiration to take another look at what, and who is in their life.

Sebastian does have Ariel's back, even though sometimes he's highly exasperated with her. But this Little Mermaid quote shows just how much he loves her. One of the biggest expanded storylines in the live-action The Little Mermaid is the conflict between humans and merpeople. Humans think merpeople lure them to wreck their ships and drown while merpeople believe humans want to catch and kill them while they’re out at sea. Both have fundamentally misunderstood the other, not seeing that all people aren’t exactly the same.
Ariel, however, understands that there has to be some good in humans. She implores her father to see that humans aren’t their enemies. He doesn’t see it right away, but Ariel’s words will likely hit home for the very young members of the audience of the movie. Between new lines like this in 2023's live-action version and classic ones from the 1989 animated movie, there are so many The Little Mermaid quotes that audiences will remember.
