Here's the next part everyone. I must say, it's really odd writing in a new environment. I just hope everything comes off sounding the same and with the same feel as it did when I was writing at home. Anyway, as always, hope you enjoy this part and I'll try to get the climax up soon.
Oh, and BTW, for a friend of mine, when you're visualizing Eric's mask, think of the Phantom's from the Point of No Return scene in the PotO movie! ******************************************************
Even though her small mask only covered the area around her eyes, Ariel still pulled it down to get a better look at all the happenings going on around her. She had never been to a masquerade. In fact, Ariel had never been to any kind of human party. She looked around and saw all kinds of different faces expressing every emotion from rapture to despair. And there weren’t just masks of human faces, either. There were also masks of all kinds of animals. Ariel could recognize most of them but there were still some that seemed strange and unfamiliar to her. She wished she had Eric around to ask him questions. No matter where they were, if there was some human thing Ariel didn’t understand, Eric was right there to explain it for her. At this point, Ariel didn’t even have to ask, Eric would just appear at her side to give her all the answers she needed. Now that she thought about Eric, Ariel realized that he hadn’t come down yet and the ball had been going on for about an hour. Needless to say she was anxious to see him, but she wasn’t nervous; she was just starting to wonder what could be keeping him. Before she could even come up with some possible scenarios, someone tapped on her shoulder. “You weren’t trying to take off your mask were you?” Ariel turned around to see a lion with a raven perched upon him. Really, it was just James with Charlotte on his arm. She couldn’t help but smile when she thought about the perfection of their choices in costume. Charlotte was in a dramatic black dress that had black beadwork on the bodice. Her mask was in the same style as Ariel’s only hers had small black feathers around it. James was wearing a golden suit with knee-high boots. He was wearing his hair down instead of it being tied back as it usually was. Obviously, he was trying to use his sandy, shoulder length hair as a mane. His golden mask was a lion’s snout, complete with whiskers. Ariel couldn’t help but giggle. “Of course not, James,” Ariel replied with a smile. “I just wanted to get a better look at the outstanding decorations.” “They did come out looking rather splendid, didn’t they?” “That they did.” “Ariel please, don’t,” Charlotte said. “It’ll only fuel his ego.” “Well, then,” Ariel continued, trying not to smile, “I guess I shouldn’t tell him how much I admire his costume.” “Thank you Ariel,” James said with a slight yet stylized bow. “Only the greatest of beasts could cover my visage. The lion is the only creature imbued with enough power and grace to equal mine.” “He should have been a turkey,” Charlotte said without missing a beat. “How can you speak about your king that way?” James asked, overly offended. “I do love your dress Ariel,” Charlotte said, completely ignoring the beast at her side. “Thank you Charlotte.” The thought of masquerading as a fish tonight had tempted Ariel, she had decided to just wear a dress with a matching mask. She had settled on a dress with short, slightly puffed sleeves that were slightly off the shoulder. The fabric was pure white with small bursts cerulean colored beads all over it. The skirt of the dress was actually a solid cerulean color, but the beaded fabric laid over it, crossing over itself, leaving an opening that revealed the solid colored skirt underneath. Not only was the dress stunning, but it looked positively striking against Ariel’s red hair, which she had decided to wear down for the evening. “Your dress is spectacular Ariel,” James said emphatically. “Eric will die when he sees you in that.” Ariel smiled and tried to hide the way she snapped to attention at the mere mention of Eric’s name. “He should be down here already,” Charlotte said. She looked towards the doors of the ballroom then back to Ariel . “I thought he’d get here as soon as he could, seeing as how he has something to ‘discuss’ with you.” Ariel blushed, but only a little. At this point, everyone knew about Eric’s cold feet and it had just become a running joke. But even though Charlotte was just playing around, Ariel found herself looking rather longingly at the doors. “I thought so too,” she said with a melancholy smile. “But wait,” James said. “The vision of you in that dress might render him speechless yet again! Maybe you should go upstairs and change into a burlap sack. It might make it easier for him.” “James, stop,” Ariel scolded with a smile. “It’s true though. Eric doesn’t need any distractions tonight.” “I might,” Ariel said with a sigh. James could see that Ariel was getting a little nervous, and he was just about to do something about it when Antonia rushed up to them. “Guys, guess who’s here? Liz!” “I haven’t seen her in years,” Charlotte said, cracking a smile. “Where is she?” James demanded. “Bring her to me, she owes me a kiss!” “What?” asked Charlotte, with one eyebrow arching up from under her mask.
“Oh,” said James, embarrassed. “I was young and foolish. I really don’t care about the kiss. It’s probably stale by now anyway.” “It had better be,” Charlotte said, without breaking the stare she had put on James. “Other than obviously being an old flame,” Tony started, talking to Ariel but giving James a playful look, “Liz was the biggest social butterfly of the academy. No one could throw a ball like her. But, what was better than being invited to a party of hers was having her come to one of yours.” “Hello, everyone,” said a sweet, singsong voice. Ariel turned around to see a small, brown haired girl in a green dress. After her little greeting, she went up to Tony, Charlotte, and James individually and gave them each a hug. “I’m sorry we haven’t met,” she said, once she got to Ariel. “Elizabeth Percy, but everybody calls me Liz. Nice to meet you.” “I’m Ariel,” she said, shaking her hand with a smile. Ariel didn’t know Liz at all, but she could feel that she brought a good time wherever she went. “Oh, yes, you came with Eric. Tony told me earlier. Greysmith is certainly a change from Eric’s kingdom. How do you like it here?” “It’s beautiful. I’m really glad I got a chance to come.” “Good, good. You’re lucky that he brought you in October. I always love to travel in the fall. The weather is perfect and the change of season is beautiful to see with the trees changing color.” It was amazing to Ariel that Liz was so comfortable in conversation. She didn’t even have to search for words or anything. There was no question that Liz was the socialite that Tony had described. “If you don’t mind my asking,“ Liz asked. “Where is the belated birthday boy?” “We don’t know Liz,” Tony answered. “He’s off somewhere with my fiancé and so that means we’ll probably never see either of them again.” Liz started laughing. “It’s good to know that they’re still joined at the hip. Ariel, there used to be a time at school where you couldn’t separate the two of them with a metal bar. It must have been hard for them to not see each other for two years.” “I think they missed each other a lot,” Tony said. “They’re probably just making up for lost time,” Liz continued. “But still, Eric better get down here quick. Everyone’s chomping at the bit to see him.” “If I know Eric, he’s in no hurry to see them,” James chimed in. “What do you mean?” Ariel asked. “Eric just hates his own parties, that’s all,” James explained. “He hates being the center of attention, which I never understood.” “Of course you wouldn’t,” Charlotte muttered. “It’s going to be bad for him tonight,” Liz continued. “Ariel have you ever been to one of these parties before?” “Actually no.” “Well, when Ethan throws a small party, it’s wonderful; close friends who all know each other and it’s a whole lot of fun. No pressure, just dancing and talking. But with a big masquerade like this one, plus the fact that no one has seen Eric in two years means that there’s a lot of…well…” “Snobby, pretentious, drips waiting for their chance to hobnob with royalty,” Charlotte finished. “Thank you Charlotte, exactly.” “We thought about that,” said Tony, “but we used some of the old registries from the academy to make the guest list. Suddenly, we found that we had turned our nice little party into some kind of class reunion.” “Don’t get us wrong,” Liz said, “it’s good to see so many old friends, but I feel like no one is going to get a chance to talk with our two princes, especially Eric.” Ariel didn’t want to show any sign that what Liz had said worried her, but evidently, it showed nonetheless. She looked over to James, who was looking back at her with a gaze encouragement that showed right through his mask. “Oh, goodness,” Liz exclaimed suddenly. “Brandon Rutherford is standing near the punchbowl. I always had a huge crush on him.” “I remember that,” said Tony. “I have to go over and see him. I’ll see you all later tonight. It was great meeting you Ariel. Take care of Eric for us.” With that, Liz rushed off in hopes of finally claiming Brandon Rutherford for herself. “Didn’t Brandon get married last summer?” asked James. Tony thought for a second. Then, suddenly, her eyes got huge and her hands jumped to her face. “You’re right! I don’t think Liz knows that!” A sly smirk crossed Charlotte’s face. “Maybe she does.” Tony gave Charlotte a serious ‘come on’ look. “I have to stop her before she tries anything.” Tony rushed off in search of Liz to try and stop her from becoming a home-wrecker, leaving James, Charlotte, and Ariel laughing. When they had regained composure, James went into thought. “Ariel, there was something I wanted to ask you. What was it? Oh, yes! I remember. I wanted to ask you if you would like to dance?” “James, that would be wonderful. But I can’t steal you from Charlotte.” “No, please, by all means, take him. I have no energy for trotting after him with the way he dances.” “Alright then. I’d love to dance with you James.” With regality that could not be equaled, James reached for Ariel’s hand and they went off towards the dance floor. “James, be careful with her, she’s small!” Really, James was an excellent dancer. He led effortlessly. Ariel didn’t have to think about a thing. They would get dangerously close to another couple, but then at the last second, James would sweep Ariel around with one step and they were in the clear. “You know I taught that boy of yours everything he knows.” “Really, James? He is a good dancer.” “Yes, and I’m the reason why. It was hysterical the first time we all went to a dance. Eric had no idea what he was doing with that poor little girl in his arms. You see, having sea legs, being the sailor that he is, his balance was all off. He was dipping and sliding like some kind of beached seal.” Knowing the visual of this very well, Ariel burst out laughing. “He’ll hate me for telling you this.” “No it’s alright. I promise I won’t tell him that you did.” “Well, we took him to the stables, the girls, and Ethan, and I, and we taught him how to dance. We had to go to that stable for four hours everyday for a week, but by the time we were done, he was ready to dance with the Bolshoi.” “It sounds like you all took very good care of Eric.” “Well, we tried, but sometimes with Eric it’s so much work. And it seems that we didn’t prepare him for everything. I don’t think he was ready for you at all.” “But even when it comes to me, you all are taking care of him. I know that you who gave him the ‘let’s hang decorations up over there, alone’ idea.” “Yes, that was me. I can’t help it though. Being such a seasoned master of love, it pains me deeply to see a man as confounded as Eric was. Especially when his target is as wonderful as you, Ariel.” “Thanks James,” Ariel said, a little embarrassed. “Really Ariel,” James started straight-forwardly, with a distinct lack of flare. Even with a mask on, Ariel could tell that his demeanor had changed somehow. “You don’t have anything to worry about tonight. There is no question about how Eric feels about you, you know that. At this point, the only thing that’s making your nerves jump is the excitement of knowing that from the second Eric walks through that door, every thought that crosses his mind will be about you. You will be his one and only focus until he tells you every expression of love that’s been resting on his heart.” Then, the music stopped, the dance stopped, and Ariel was just staring up at James. Everyone else around her, including her dance partner was applauding the musicians, but Ariel was in shock. What James had just told her was one of the sweetest things she had ever heard, but in a million years she would never have expected them to come from James. In that one moment she knew exactly why Charlotte loved him, why she could get so angry at him and yet never leave his side. “Ariel, what is it? You’re looking at me as if you’ve just experienced some deep affirmation.” “In a way,” she said with a smile. “Thanks for the dance James, I appreciate it.” “Of course,” James said, escorting Ariel back to where Charlotte was standing. “What are friends for but to dance with the love interests of other friends?” Just that quickly, James was back to his dramatic yet playful self. Ariel laughed as they made their way back to Charlotte. “Thanks for letting me borrow him, Charlotte.” “That’s alright, Ariel. I should rent him out more often.” “Oh, darling you don’t mean that,” James said, kissing Charlotte on the cheek. “You're right, I don’t. There’s no market for a man like you.” “I’ll just interpret that as ‘my love, you are priceless’.” Charlotte was rolling her eyes just as the sound of trumpets caught the attention of everyone in the room. Like a massive wave, the entire ballroom turned in the direction of the enormous ballroom doors at the top of the two staircases that curved down to the ballroom floor. Grimsby was standing at the landing of the left staircase, looking dignified as always. “Ladies and Gentlemen. It is my honor to present to you this evening’s guests of honor: Prince Ethan and Prince Eric.”

One wonders where you ever got the inspiration for the name Brandon Rutherford? Brandon Roth...Routh... hmm... : ) If my suspicions are correct, I empathize with Liz completely. I can't wait to hear your description of Eric standing at the top of the stairs in a suit with the point of no return mask...ooooooh mmmy.......

I just LOVE your characterization of Eric's pals. And I love the banter between James and Charlotte, very cute, and it seems very real. When I read the dialouges between all the friends, and how great of buddies the all are it kind of reminds me of The Maraduers (sp?) in Harry Potter. I don't know why, but Ethan and Eric remind me of James and Sirius. But GREAT story, I can't wait for more!!

Here it is.... *******************************************************
“You’re ready.”
“I’m ready.”
“You’ll be fine.”
“I’ll be fine.”
“You love Ariel.”
“I love Ariel.”
“No hesitation. Good. That’s good.”
Ethan patted Eric on the back.
They were both standing outside the two huge oak doors of the ballroom.
“I just hate this part,” Eric said, looking up at the doors.
“I know. Me too.”
“How many people did you say you invited?”
“About three hundred and fifty.”
There was silence.
“It’s not that bad,” Ethan said, trying to soften the blow.
“Not that bad? Ethan, I think there are less people than that in my kingdom.”
“First, that’s not true. Second, it doesn’t matter if there’s a thousand people in that ballroom, you only care about one.”
“True.”
Another silence.
“Alright,” Ethan spoke up, “I think they’re ready.”
The trumpets sounded from just behind the doors. “Hey Eric,” Ethan said, completely startling him.
“Yeah, what?”
“Don’t forget your mask,” Ethan answered, throwing him a small black mask.
As Eric put on his mask, he looked over to Ethan, who shot him one last smile. He was trying to keep himself calm, but his heart almost jumped out of his chest when he heard Grimsby say his name.
The doors opened, the trumpets blasted, and in a ripple from front to back, the sea of people bowed. It all seemed very dignified and orthodox until the mass of young nobles and gentry broke out into a roar of cheers and applause. Ethan and Eric couldn’t help but smile at each other. Every now and then, it was good to be a prince. But in less than a second, Eric was back to being nervous, and tried to scan the ballroom for that unmistakable head of red hair.
For Ariel, the moment Eric stepped onto the landing brought the greatest relief she had felt in three days. Just seeing him made her feel better instantly. She wanted to run through the swarm of people, straight up the stairs, and into his arms. But, by a miracle of restraint, she stayed right there, like all the other guests, gazing at the prince from afar.
It was then that Ethan and Eric started walking down the stairs, with sufficient dramatic affect; Ethan descending on the left and Eric on the right. Even though he was looking everywhere, Eric could not find Ariel. With each step down the stairs he lost sight of more people, and soon he wouldn’t be able to see over the crowd at all. Suddenly, he just stopped and looked over the floor. It seemed as if the instant he stopped he found her. He just stood there for a minute smiling at her, as she tried to smile back without showing how relieved she was that he had finally spotted her.
Something finally did grab Eric’s attention. He got that feeling that someone was just staring at him (well, more so than the three hundred and fifty people who were all looking at him). He quickly turned to his left to see that Ethan had stopped too and was just calmly looking at him. When he saw that he had gotten Eric’s attention, he gave him a polite “after you” gesture. Eric got the message and continued walking down the rest of the stairs.
The second his foot touched the ballroom floor Eric was resolute on reaching Ariel. But in that same moment, all the energy in the room surged toward him. There were masks everywhere asking every sort of question:
“How are you, Eric? It’s been so long!”
“Have you gotten taller?”
“Does Max still follow you everywhere?”
“Can you spare a dance with me, or are you saved for someone special?”
“What have you done with yourself for two years?”
Eric tried to look over what seemed like countless heads while simultaneously answering whichever question he could pick out from the muddled words that were bombarding him from all directions. He knew that propriety dictated that he be cordial and polite, but talking about his intentions for the first minuet of the night was the last thing he wanted to discuss.
Across the room, and completely alone, stood Antonia, Charlotte, James, and Ariel; the only people in the room who hadn’t rushed to the front of the ballroom in order to get a peek at the entering royals.
“I wonder if he can breath in there,” Charlotte said. “I don’t think they let him even get off the stairs before they pounced on him.”
Ariel smiled.
“He’s probably hating this, isn’t he?”
“Oh, there’s no question,” James answered. “This is probably the closest thing to torture you could subject Eric to; a room full of people who think he’s the center of the universe.”
“I hate to say it,” Tony added, “but I think you’re right. I know the only thing on his mind right now is how to get out of there, and over here with a certain redhead I know.”
“That’s right,” James said. “The dashing prince must reach his fair maiden. But to do so he will first have to slay the fiercest dragon of all: party guests!”
“I don’t know James,” Ariel said, looking at the crowd in front of her. “It doesn’t look like he’ll be able to reach her tonight.”
James looked to Charlotte and Antonia. They all knew that there was a very good chance that Ariel was right. All bets aside, they really did want Eric to finally tell Ariel how he felt tonight. Actually, they were probably almost as anxious as Ariel was. They had been waiting for six years for Eric to finally fall in love, and they couldn’t have chosen a better object for his affections than Ariel. But at the same time, they knew that there was nothing they could do. They had helped enough in these three days; he had to do this on his own. Whatever problem he faced now, Eric would have to find his own way around it.
Unfortunately, Eric really felt like he could use some help.
“Eric,” said a foreign princess on Eric’s right, “why haven’t we seen you at any of the parties lately? We know you’ve got that kingdom to rule, but that doesn’t mean you have to completely break all ties with civilized society!”
“I know,” Eric said, trying to smile. “It’s just that it’s been a transitional period for the kingdom, having to adjust to new leadership and…”
Eric wasn’t even paying attention to what he was saying at this point. Who knows why he didn’t go to parties! Oh that’s right, because I hate going to parties where I can’t enjoy myself at all because I’m too busy having to talk to people about how much I’ll enjoy myself at the next party, he thought.
What was even more annoying than having to respond to all these pointless questions was the fact that Eric didn’t feel like he was in control of anything that was going on around him. He had tried to keep his bearings, but it was almost no use. At this point, he couldn’t discern which direction Ariel had been in, and even if he could, it wasn’t like he had any power over where he was going. Eric was sure that he had never been more frustrated than he was at this very moment. He felt like he was caught in the middle of the ocean, and that he was being carried out to sea, only this time, Ariel certainly wasn’t in any position to save him.
That was the thought that inspired an enlightened yet daring idea, and in an instant, Eric adopted it as a plan: He was just going to have to save himself.
From behind him, Eric heard one question: “Eric, what exactly have you done lately?”
“That’s a good question,” Eric responded, turning around. “I’m sure a lot of people are wondering that exact same thing.”
Then, Eric started looking around, trying to find the staircase. When he found it, he calmly pardoned himself and made his way to the steps, causing everyone he passed by to take notice and whisper. He climbed the first few steps to where he could look over the entire crowd, but, more importantly, to where he could see Ariel.
“Everyone, everyone,” Eric called out, raising his voice over the murmuring crowd, which soon fell silent.
Ethan turned from where he was standing and looked at his supposedly socially timid friend addressing the entire room.
“What is he doing Ethan?” someone asked him.
“I have absolutely no idea,” he answered, as he moved toward the back of the crowd to find Tony.
“I was just asked a very important question,” Eric started. “I believe it was you, Lady Camille. Ask it again, if you don’t mind. Loudly, so we can all hear.”
“I asked you what have you done lately!” shouted Lady Camille, loving the fact that the prince had called on her by name.
“Thank you. I think I would be right to assume that everyone has wanted to ask me that same question tonight.”
Everyone in the ballroom shouted their agreement, just as Ethan reached Tony.
“What is he doing? Did he tell you anything about this?”
“No, I have no idea.”
Tony, Ethan, Charlotte, and James all looked at each other, then, slowly they all looked at Ariel.
“Don’t look at me!” she said, laughing. “I have no clue.”
“Ok…,” Ethan said, looking back at Eric.
“Well,” Eric began, “if you had asked me that question about five months ago, my answer would probably have been very boring; it would have been something sound and normal. But, even though that would have been fine, I’m very glad that you asked me now, and not five months ago.”
“Why is that, Eric?” James asked, trying to help build Eric’s momentum. Plus, James didn’t mind causing a few heads to turn his way.
“What was that, James?” Eric asked. “Why?” he repeated, with all the gusto he had.
“That, James, is an even better question than the first one,” Eric said with an excitement that not even his mask could hide. In fact, Eric was so moved by this particular query, that he began to descend the stairs into the crowd, which was parting like a biblical sea, allowing the prince to walk by.
“Because,” Eric started, still addressing the entire room, “the last five months of my life have been neither sound nor normal. I’ve met people and done things in that short amount of time that you wouldn’t believe. I mean, I can’t even believe half of the things that have happened to me!”
Eric turned to his right and saw the familiar face of Sir Andrew Barrymore.
“Andrew, you knew me at Crestwood. Would you say that I was daring, or adventurous, or capable of any kind of spontaneous action when I was at school?”
Even though he was a little startled, Sir Andrew tried his best to come up with a suitable answer.
“Well, um, no Eric. Actually, I would say you were quite cautious.”
“Cautious! Thank you! That word is perfect; that’s exactly it.” Then Eric paused for a moment. “That's what I have done lately, or, stopped doing, really. I have stopped being cautious, or safe, or careful. And the thing is, I’ve never been happier. I feel more content with my life the way it is now than I have ever been before. I can be myself and I don’t have to worry if that’s enough for anybody else…because I know that it’s enough for one person.”
As he said this, the last few people stepped aside, putting Eric just outside the perimeter of the crowd. Finally he had a clear view of Ariel for the first time since he had entered the room.
The guests behind Eric were all whispering and murmuring. First, this was very strange behavior for a prince; none of them had ever seen anyone, let alone Eric, do something like this. Second, who could possibly be of any consequence standing back there?
After a moment, Eric walked away from the crowd behind him, until he was close enough to Ariel to see the lines her tears had left on her mask. James, Charlotte, Ethan, and Tony slowly moved to the side to give them this moment as alone as they could be in a ballroom full of people.
Finally, Eric took off his mask and looked at Ariel, assured and excited.
“I love you, Ariel. I’m just sorry it’s taken me so long to tell you.”
It was impossible for Ariel to put what she was feeling into any kind of intelligible words. So, she did the one thing that seeing Eric always made her want to do…She ran up to him, threw her arms around him, and she kissed him. (It’s hard to truly describe the depth of this singular moment, but, let’s just say that it made The Kiss of True Love look like a peck on the cheek.)
Not a single person in that ballroom was unmoved by what had just unfolded before them. Of course, Ethan and Antonia were beside themselves, James was bursting with pride, and Charlotte, well, if you looked really close, you could see the tears welling up in her eyes. But even the “snobby, pretentious, drips” were affected. In fact, some of the ladies were said to have actually shown genuine emotion for the first time that night!
There were about three seconds of beautiful silence before James spoke up:
“Here, here Eric! HUZZAH!”
The room erupted into screams and cheers, huzzahs and congratulations…but Ariel and Eric didn’t hear a thing. At one point, they did stop kissing, but only long enough for Eric to take off Ariel’s mask and wipe her tears, and then, they went right back to their previous engagement.
The music played and the people danced and everything looked like it had worked out splendidly, but, there was one last loose end to tie up.
As Tony was looking at Ariel and Eric and how happy they were, a thought struck her. She nudged Ethan, who was standing next to her and reached out her palm without even looking at him.
“Now?” Ethan asked, turning to Tony.
She simply nodded her head ‘yes’.
Ethan took out a bag of coins from his inner jacket pocket, took out three coins, and refusing to look at Tony, he dropped them in her hand.

Thanks so much you guys! I was really excited to write this part and I'm glad that you like it! To answer your question ariel7angel, yes, there is a little bit more to this story. But, even when this one ends, I've really gotten attached to these characters, so I think there will be a continuation of some sort.
Like I said, thanks so much everybody for everything that you've written. All your posts have made me really glad that I wrote this and decided to post it here!

AQUISHA!!! Huzzah!!! Huzzah!!! I can't wait for the end, and then more! You're right to be attached to the characters, they are so wonderful! I love how you wrote them! They aren't random filler characters, but they're all so great and fun to get to know! They remind me a bit of the characters from the Belgariad, with their liveliness and great characterization. Have you ever read that series? Anyway, I repeat: Huzzah!!!

Hi everybody! I know I said there was more to this story and there is, it's just that my brain is having issues scultping this last part. Maybe I have to recharge after writing that climax, I don't know. Also, I've been really busy because my dance company is going to the Rose Bowl (I made a thread for it in the Atlantica section) and those rehearsals are brutal all this week. I will try my hardest to get my butt in gear and give this story the proper ending it deserves. Until then, thank you all again for your patience and kind words

I agree, I'm so looking forward to the next chapter of your story. I just love it and I also think that you should absolutely write another fic. I love it!
