Here’s how Alexa made waves at the Star Magical Prom as the mermaid princess Ariel straight from her stylist, Patty Yap.
At the recent Star Magical Prom, Alexa Ilacad graced the event as The Little Mermaid’s Ariel. Bearing a resemblance to both the mermaid and even a sea goddess, the Pira-Pirasong Paraiso star took the fairytale royalty theme seriously. Having a polished look that warranted her Prom Queen title, the actress actually conceptualized the idea along with her stylist, Patty Yap. In an exclusive interview with MEGA, Patty tells us the story behind Alexa’s sea fairytale ensemble.

Flowing with creativity
In fairytales, the first half of the word is almost always present—the fairy. Initially, the plan for Alexa was to go as a hybrid of a fairy who floated on air and a mermaid under the sea. “[But] she told me, itodo na namin to Ariel,” Patty recalls.
The relationship of a wearer and a piece, especially in a formal event, shouldn’t be like oil and water—separate and distinct from one another. Especially for an occasion like prom, the dress and its carrier should move together like the wind and the waves. Yap, given Ilacad’s firm choice to embody Ariel, only knew one designer who could give justice to Alexa’s ideas and hers—Ehrran Montoya. “Siya ‘yung avant garde na designer who can achieve our vision without being costumey ‘yung design. Para lang tayong mag-Met Gala.”
Alexa Ilacad Star Magical Prom Ariel Little Mermaid Stylist Patty Yap Ehrran Montoya Designer Ehrran Montaya used an iridescent fabric to get the colors of Ariel
With his maximalist interpretations of natural transformations such as a butterfly’s metamorphosis, as well as his strategic use of iridescent fabrics and beaded arrangements, Montoya translated their collective vision for the ivory carpet. Taking into consideration the original colorway of the character, the designer mentioned in his post that they had to find a fabric that reflected both lavender and green. Intricate appliqués of crystals, pearls, and dangling beads created the illusion of Alexa walking into the land after a dip into the sea. Achieving the silhouette of a mermaid, the bodice had a corseted lining, while the skirt mimicked the mythical creature’s tail. As Alexa stayed committed to her look, so did Ehrran with the design of her gown.

Trudging the waters of fashion
“Ang gusto ko kay Alexa, she knows what she wants,” Yap explains, talking about the Star Magic artist. “Very hands on, siya ‘yung nagsesend nung itsura ng damit, ‘yung pegs. Pati sa hairstyle and makeup. Very creative talaga.”
Alexa Ilacad Star Magical Prom Ariel Little Mermaid Stylist Patty Yap Ehrran Montoya Alexa stayed true to her DNA of gracing the occasion in a polished and put together look
It goes without saying that embodying a specific look takes commitment despite the challenge. For this prom style especially, they had to be very particular with the hair and makeup to balance the whole ensemble. Comparing their relationship to those of sisters, Patty said that they are honest with each other when they are bouncing off ideas. “She knows how to listen. I am very particular, especially when it comes to the hair. For me, ‘pag hindi okay ‘yung hair mo, the whole styling, mawawala. Masisira.”

For the actress’ glam, makeup artist Jake Galvez and hairstylist Justine Ocampo stayed true to the mermaid theme without going over the top. Galvez used shimmer shades of pink on the lids and cheeks, while keeping the lips natural and healthy with a light peach shade. Meanwhile, Ocampo styled Alexa’s hair into a middle-parted mane in wet-like, natural beach waves.
Swimming into style
As an encouraging stylist, Patty knows the importance of confidence at occasions like the prom. “Alamin niyo ‘yung theme, alamin niyo ‘yung event. Also, be confident, kasi ikaw magdadala ng damit. Claim the outfit! Be confident!” she reminds.

Ariel's sisters were included in the live-action version of The Little Mermaid, but they are very different from their animated versions.
A blended image showcases Ariel and her six sisters in the 2023 live action Disney remake of The Little Mermaid
Summary
Ariel has six older sisters who are responsible for different parts of the sea and assist King Triton in his duties. Each sister has unique characteristics and roles, such as Mala being fearless and committed to protecting the reefs, and Caspia being selfless and putting her people first. The live-action remake provides more details about Ariel's sisters through merchandise, showcasing their individual personalities and storylines.
The live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid made a couple of changes to the animated classic, among them Ariel’s sisters, who, though they appear in the movie, are very different from their animated versions. The list of Disney’s live-action remakes continues to grow, and now part of it is The Little Mermaid. Director Rob Marshall and writer David Magee took the 1989 animated classic (based on the 1837 fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen) and brought it to life with Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.
The Little Mermaid’s live-action remake follows the same story as the animated version, with mermaid Ariel being fascinated by the human world and making a dangerous deal with sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) to become human. The Little Mermaid brought the most notable characters from the animated movie to life, along with some minor characters that are an essential part of Ariel’s life. Falling into the latter category are Ariel’s sisters, who briefly appear in the 1989 adaptation and have even less screen time in the 2023 live-action version.
7 Ariel Has Six Older Sisters The Seven Daughters Represent The Seven Seas
Though Ariel's mother is absent from both the original Disney animated movie and the modern live-action remake, she still has a large family under the sea. Ariel is the youngest of Triton's seven daughters. In the original animated movie, her sisters are Attina, Alana, Aquata, Arista, Adella, and Andrina. There is clearly a theme with all of their names beginning with "A," but that changes in the live-action movie. It's also not the only change for The Little Mermaid.
Ariel's sisters might have a brief role in the live-action movie, but the roles they play in the sea are significant. Each of Ariel's sisters is responsible for a specific part of the sea, reporting back to their father on the state of their corner of the ocean. They help to clean up shipwrecks and pollution caused by humans as well. Their brief time on screen shows that they all share in King Triton's responsibilities for the sea.
Because the roles of Ariel's sisters are limited in the live-action The Little Mermaid, much of what the audience learns about them individually is from Disney's merchandise. The sisters feature in lines of dolls and books, and there is a lot of information about them in that merchandise.
6 Mala Played By Karolina Conchet
Karolina Conchet as Mala with pink scales and fins in the live action Little Mermaid
Princess Mala represents Princess Attina from the animated movie, Triton’s firstborn daughter. Mala is the ruler of the Chaine Sea, and her color palette is hot pink, orange, and yellow. Mala is described as the most fearless out of all of Triton’s daughters (though that might be debatable after everything Ariel went through), and she’s committed to protecting the reefs at any cost. As such, she hates shipwrecks, as they pollute the ocean.
Mala is a natural and strong leader, and she’s also known for her sense of humor. Mala used to send messages on seaweed scrolls to humans before King Triton forbade any interactions with humans, and following her mother’s death, she started hating humans and the damage they do to the sea. As Triton’s eldest daughter, Attina is the first in line to take over Atlantica, so King Triton has prepared her well for that. As a result, Attina is the less impulsive of the sisters, and she constantly worries about not letting her father down.
5 Indira Played By Simone Ashley
Simone Ashley as Indira with yellow scales and fins in the live action Little Mermaid
Princess Indira is inspired by Princess Alana from the animated version, and she serves as the ruler of the Brinedive Sea. Indira is a yellow-orange mermaid, with these colors representing the sunny and warm waters of the Brinedive Sea. Indira is described as the most generous of all the daughters of the sea, and she’s also empathetic, generous, and virtuous – however, she despised humans just as much as her father did, until Ariel’s marriage to Eric changed the ideas they had of humans.
Princess Alana, on the other hand, isn’t exactly a leader, and she’s more focused on looking beautiful than on the politics of the Seven Seas. Although she might seem shallow and self-obsessed, Alana is kind, soft-spoken, and intelligent.
4 Caspia Played By Nathalie Sorrell
Nathalie Sorrell as Caspia with blue fins and scales in the live action The Little Mermaid
Princess Caspia is based on Princess Adella from the original animated movie. Princess Caspia is the ruler of the Apneic Sea, and she has blonde-pink hair, with her color palette being orange, yellow, and different shades of blue. Princess Caspia is described as the most selfless of all of Ariel’s sisters, always putting her people first, which makes her a kind and compassionate leader.
However, Princess Caspia is said to be a bit of a recluse and only travels for meetings. Just like Mala, she’s very protective of the corals and comes up with various laws to ensure that they can be safe in her kingdom. The animated Princess Adella isn’t as selfless as the live-action Princess Caspia, and she’s all about beauty, making her quite vain. Princess Adella cares more about boys than her family, and is always desperate to talk to them.
3 Tamika Played By Sienna King
Sienna King as Tamika in blue and orange fins and scales in the live action The Little Mermaid
Princess Tamika is based on Princess Aquata from the animated movie. Princess Tamika is the ruler of the Fracus Sea, and she has one of the most detailed and vibrant designs, wearing blue, orange, red, and yellow, with details on her arms, neck, and forehead, representing the vibrant fish and coral found in her sea. Princess Tamika is described as the toughest of the daughters of the sea, as well as the most tactical one said to “rule with an iron fin”.
However, Princess Tamika is said to rule with grace and an admiral's strength, and she will fight sharks to keep her people safe. The animated Princess Aquata isn’t as tough as Princess Tamika, and she especially hates when her sisters borrow her things without her permission, and she’s willing to do whatever she needs to get them back.
2 Karina Played By Kajsa Mohammar
Kajsa Mohammar as Karina with blue and white fins and scales in the live action The Little Mermaid
Princess Karina is based on Princess Arista from the animated movie. Princess Karina is the ruler of the Saithe Sea (the Dark Sea), which is mostly coated with ice, which is why she has white hair and wears white, black, and different shades of blue. Princess Karina is described as the most decisive, intuitive, and reclusive of Ariel’s sisters, and developed a fear of humans after her mother died (though she got over it after Ariel’s marriage to Princess Eric).
She doesn't have much in common with her animated counterpart. Princess Arista tends to “borrow” things from her oldest sisters, especially Aquata, and she has a zest for adventure just like Ariel.
1 Perla Played By Lorena Andrea
Lorena Andrea as Perla with red and white scales and fins in the live action The Little Mermaid
Princess Perla is based on Princess Andrina from the 1989 animated version of The Little Mermaid, and she’s the ruler of the Piton Sea. Perla is described as the most charismatic of all of King Triton’s daughters (yes, even more than Ariel), and she’s all about warmth and kindness, so much so that it’s said that she once charmed and stopped a group of orcas from attacking a colony of penguins. Princess Perla is a red mermaid with some white and blue details on her tail, most likely a representation of the temperate and deep waters she rules over.
As a ruler, Perla is said to do so with a good temperament and is very careful with the choices she makes, putting decisions to a vote to keep the peace. Just like King Triton and most of her sisters, she started hating humans after the death of her mother. In the animated movie and its expanded media, her counterpart, Andrina is the least developed of Ariel’s sisters, so not much is known about her other than she’s portrayed as a sort of “class clown”, bringing a lot of sass and sarcasm to the original The Little Mermaid.

SUMMARY Javier Bardem is one of Hollywood's best-known faces, and he is currently enjoying the success of his latest film, Dune 2. Bardem's turn as Stilgar is winning him a lot of praise, and he revealed the reason he chose to play the leader of the Fremen and King Triton in The Little Mermaid. His children prompted Bardem to play the two iconic characters, and he acquiesced.
Javier Bardem is currently riding the success of his latest film, Dune 2. The Spanish actor is a well-known face within the film fraternity, and he has delivered several noteworthy performances throughout his career. Bardem’s prowess as an actor is irrefutable. With every role, he has exhibited his acting range and grasp over the characters he has played.
Bardem also has an Oscar award in the Best Supporting Actor category for No Country for Old Men. However, the actor does have a lovely way when it comes to choosing his scripts, such as the Dune series and Disney’s Little Mermaid.
Javier Bardem reveals how he chooses his scripts Javier Bardem‘s stature as an actor has grown over the years, even if he had to struggle to get to where he is at present. He was nearly typecast as the brawny s*x symbol, but that did not stop him from playing roles that he felt connected to.
Javier Bardem’s latest movie is Denis Villeneuve‘s second installment in the Dune series. He returned to play the role of Stilgar, the leader of the Fremen. Bardem has been winning accolades ever since the movie came out, and even fans have taken to social media to turn him into the king of memes.

As incredible an actor as Bardem is, he is also an amazing father. The Vicky Cristina Barcelona star’s children can attest to it.
Javier Bardem made an appearance on Conan O’Brien’s podcast last year. He touched on a variety of subjects and made some interesting revelations, the most interesting of which was, of course, how he chose his scripts now.
Javier Bardem in Dune Bardem revealed why he chose to play Stilgar (Source: Dune)
The actor revealed that he chose to play Stilgar in Dune due to his son. On the other hand, his daughter wanted him to play King Triton in The Little Mermaid, so he could not refuse her request. “I do ‘Dune’ for him, I do ‘The Little Mermaid’ for her, and I get the paychecks for both,” he told O’Brien.
How did both Dune 2 and The Little Mermaid perform? The second installment of Dune has become a massive success at the box office. Even though the film is still in its opening week, it has been raking in the moolah.
So far, Dune 2 has grossed approximately $217 million around the world, (via Collider) and the numbers will only rise in the upcoming days. In addition to carefully curating the strategy around its release, positive word of mouth has done wonders for this adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel.
While Denis Villeneuve might have taken creative liberties with this project, they have paid off. Fans have been very receptive towards the film, praising every aspect of his epic.
The Little Mermaid was a live-action remake of the 1989 film. The film grossed almost $119 million in its opening weekend domestically. Unfortunately, the overseas market was not as receptive. It finally ended its run with $560 million at the box office.
Javier Bardem pocketed a fair amount as King Triton, and he is set to pocket a hefty check as Stilgar too.

Javier Bardem is a family man, if nothing else. At least that's what his recent role selection would indicate. The actor has starred in the likes of Disney's live-action Little Mermaid and Denis Villeneuve's Dune series.
On an appearance on Conan O'Brien's podcast last year, Bardem revealed he picks his roles to appease his kids. “Dune was for him [his son], I do [The Little] Mermaid for her [his daughter] and I get a paycheck for both,” he said.

It's not a bad mindset by Bardem. He has children that eventually have to go off to college, as O'Brien noted during the podcast.
Javier Bardem has already done it all in his career. He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the Coen Brothers' No Country for Old Men. Bardem had previously been nominated for his performances in Before Night Falls and Blutiful. In 2021, he received another nomination for playing Desi Arnaz in Being the Ricardos.
But yes, recently, Bardem has been a staple of blockbuster films. He's starred in Dune, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, and The Little Mermaid in the past few years.
In Dune, Bardem plays Stilgar. His character has a huge role in the sequel and is an adamant believer in Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet).
In Disney's The Little Mermaid, a live-action remake of the animated classic, Bardem played King Triton. Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, and Melissa McCarthy. The remake made nearly $570 million at the box office.

The pair welcomed their son Halo in 2023 and the Grammy nominee revealed the exciting news in an Instagram post on Jan. 6, sharing a picture of her holding her newborns hand. As for why she chose to keep it private until after his birth—she said it came from a "place of protection."

Halle Bailey is sharing the many reasons why she decided to keep her pregnancy private.
The singer and actress, 23, was one of four honorees at Thursday's 2024 ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards. During her acceptance speech, Bailey reflected on her career and the birth of her son Halo, whom she quietly welcomed last year.
"We are Black women in entertainment, and although we signed up for the challenges of the spotlight, in this current climate, that spotlight burns brighter, hotter, and uninterrupted, whereas the scrutiny of its magnification leaves no concealment," she told the room.
"I've learned from that spotlight over the past eight years. I've also, if I'm being honest, been burned by it, too, as we all have," she said, referencing the racist backlash she faced following the announcement she'd been cast as Ariel in The Little Mermaid.
The role changed her life, but, she continued, "it cannot compare to the biggest joy of my life. And that was becoming a mom to my perfect little angel Halo." The star became tearful as she explained why she chose to keep her pregnancy private, a decision that came from "a place of protection."

"There was no way in he** I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone. Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me, or my family to that," she shared.
She opted for privacy during her pregnancy in part due to "the state of the world."
"With the state of the world and the place it is in with men trying to force their will on our bodies, no one on social media, and for da** sure, no one on the planet, was going to tell me what to do with my body or what to share with the world," she said.

Last year the "Do It" singer kept quiet about her pregnancy with boyfriend DDG until announcing the birth of their first baby in an Instagram post in January. During her Essence speech she said she was supported in her decision and inspired by "some of the strong women in my life."
"Do y'all remember when Prince Z David Marley [Zion David Marley], who came from a queen named Lauryn Hill, entered the world? Do you remember how private Beyoncé was about her pregnancy? We have that right," she said. "Every woman in the world has that right to choose what to do with their bodies and what to share with anyone or everyone."
Wiping away tears as she spoke, the star ended her remarks with words of gratitude. "So thank you. Thank you to some of the strong women in my life, like my beautiful sisters standing here on the stage with me for setting examples in resilience, confidence, and independence," she said.

Halle Bailey opened up about her pregnancy while onstage at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards on Thursday (March 7) in Los Angeles.
If you were unaware, the 23-year-old Little Mermaid actress revealed that she had welcomed her first child – a baby boy named Halo – with boyfriend DDG earlier this year. The couple kept her pregnancy a secret, only sharing the news after she’d given birth.
She touched on her decision to keep the news private during the ceremony, which was hosted at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
In a video that is currently going viral on X (formerly Twitter), Halle described her baby as “the biggest joy.”
“What was one of the biggest highlights of my life, and to be real, one of the biggest challenges, too, cannot compare to the biggest joy of my life. And that was becoming a mom to my perfect little angel Halo,” she said. “These lessons, some hard, that I’ve shared with you today, led me to a place of protection. There was no way in he** I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone.”
She continued, saying, “Halo was my gift. he is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me or my family to that unyielding spotlight.
Her sentiment was met with loud cheers from the audience.
Halle attended the event with sister and Chloe x Halle bandmate Chloe Bailey.
If you missed it, DDG recently addressed a rumor about the pregnancy. The singer recently shared some before and after photos documenting her exciting journey to motherhood.

Chloe and Halle Bailey have a bond that can't be broken -- which is probably why the older sibling here says it was no issue keeping her little sister's pregnancy a secret.
We caught up with sister duo at Essence mag's pre-Oscar gala on Thursday -- and Halle couldn't help but blush and gush about her newborn baby boy Halo, whom she shares with boyfriend DDG ... who was enjoying fatherhood as we spoke with Mama Bear.
Just check out the video DDG threw up recently ... showing him goofing around with the kid.
Anyway, back to Halle -- our photog asked if Halle's musical talents have transferred over to the baby just yet ... and based on her reaction, it sounds like it might be too early to tell.
So, instead ... we lobbed her a softball, asking how motherhood was going -- and HB told us it was great. Chloe, however, gave us a little more insight into her sister's pregnancy ... which sorta flew under the radar (although, not really).
Nonetheless, we asked Chloe if was difficult keeping everything under wraps for Halle -- and she told us it was actually a breeze. Halle herself addressed this as well during her remarks at the event ... and said she had no obligation to share her pregnancy with the world.
DDG echoed her sentiments to us recently -- saying he didn't cave to social media pressure nor did he feel the need to. Good on them.

Halle Bailey decided she had “no obligation” to share her pregnancy with the world.
The 23-year-old star revealed in December that she had welcomed son Halo with rapper DDG - whose real name is Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jnr - but had kept the news that she was even expecting to herself. She has now admitted there was “no way in he**” she was ever going to share her “biggest joy” on such a large scale.
Speaking at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards, she said: “We are black women in entertainment, and although we signed up for the challenges of the spotlight, in this current climate, that spotlight burns brighter, hotter, and uninterrupted, whereas the scrutiny of its magnification leaves no concealment. I’ve learned from that spotlight over the past eight years.
”I’ve also, if I’m being honest, been burned by it, too, as we all have.
”There was no way in he** I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone. Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me, or my family to that.”

The Little Mermaid actress then blamed the “state of the world” and hinted that the magnitude of social media was behind her reasoning to keep things private.
She said: “With the state of the world and the place it is in with men trying to force their will on our bodies, no one on social media, and for da** sure, no one on the planet, was going to tell me what to do with my body or what to share with the world.”
She captioned her Instagram post: “Even though we’re a few days into the new year, the greatest thing that 2023 could have done for me was bring me my son. Welcome to the world my Halo [love, baby and star emojis] the world is desperate to know you [wink, laughing face and heart emojis]”

“The Little Mermaid” and “Color Purple” singer-actor explained why she and rapper DDG kept their baby news quiet and off social media for months. The couple welcomed their son Halo in January.
While receiving an award at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood ceremony on Thursday, the 23-year-old said that “there was no way in he** I was gonna share the biggest joy of my world with anyone,” according to video shared by the Hollywood Reporter.
She continued: “Halo was my gift — he is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me or my family to that unyielding spotlight.”
Bailey and DDG, 26, sparked pregnancy speculation back in September 2023 when Page Six reported that the Chloe x Halle singer avoided the spotlight and was “very mindful in the way she gave hugs” at the MTV Video Music Awards. After pregnancy rumors spread, Bailey’s social media followers seemingly began paying closer attention to her every move, and her social media posts.
In the fall of 2023, fans speculated that the singer was doctoring her Instagram pictures, including those of her and DDG’s Halloween costumes and those from the “Color Purple” premiere in Los Angeles. Obviously, her fans were eager to know more about Bailey’s pregnancy.
“Welcome to the world my halo 🥰👼🏽 ✨,” she captioned the Instagram post announcing Halo’s arrival, “the world is desperate to know you 😉🤣♥️”
Since welcoming their first child together, Halle and DDG — who began dating in 2022 — have opened up about their decision to shut social media out. While responding to Snapchat fans in January, Bailey said she wanted to ensure she had a “beautiful, private, healthy time in my journey.”
In a January vlog, DDG (real name Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr.) joked about the internet sleuths who looked into his girlfriend’s pregnancy.
“A lot of y’all should quit your jobs and start looking into detective work,” he said, “‘cause y’all [would] do pretty good at it.”

A star from the live-action version of The Little Mermaid has announced that their first child has been born, much to the joy of fans and friends everywhere.

Directed by Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid brought the magic of the original 1989 Alan Menken and Howard Ashman classic to live-action, largely with the help of its phenomenal cast. This included Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as the Sea Witch Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.
Although it never hit the same heights as previous live-action remakes like The Lion King (2019) and Aladdin (2019), the film was still one of Disney’s most successful movies in 2023, eventually becoming the eighth highest-grossing film at the box office and elevating the cast to superstar status. This includes Daveed Diggs, who welcomed a new baby with his partner, Emmy Raver-Lampman.

Daveed Diggs, an actor known for his Tony Award-winning performance in Hamilton (2015) and for playing Sebastian in The Little Mermaid, and Emmy Raver-Lampman, who stars as Allison Hargraves in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, announced that they were pregnant on September 26, 2023. Now, almost six months later, they revealed that the baby had been born in an adorable (and relatable) joint Instagram announcement.
“Dear baby, you have forever changed us. our hearts are filled with a kind of love we never thought possible. We love you more than you will truly ever know. Thank you for choosing us. Now please… go the f— to sleep. Love, mom and dad.”

Diggs echoed the sentiment in a comment, saying, “Shout out to [Adam Mansbach] for writing the realest children’s book of all time,” referring to the parental classic Go the F— To Sleep (2011), which was a New York Times best-seller and read in audio form by Samuel L. Jackson.
Fans and celebrities celebrated with the couple. Diggs’ Little Mermaid co-star Halle Bailey, who gave birth to a baby boy earlier this year, said, “Congratulations! Love you!” Hamilton alum Joshua Henry, who played Gaston in the live television version of Beauty and the Beast (2022), said, “Wow!!! Congratulations to you and [Daveed Diggs]!! The sleep will come.”
