From RadioTimes: The Little Mermaid live action remake will include Part of Your World The iconic track will feature alongside other classic and some new songs written by the animation's original composer Alan Menken
By Patrick Cremona
Friday, 17th January 2020 at 4:23 pm Halle Bailey, the star of Disney’s upcoming The Little Mermaid live action remake, has confirmed that iconic song Part of Your World, in which Ariel longs to be where the people are, will be included in the film.
Bailey told PopSugar that the famous tune and other classics would feature alongside some brand-new songs written by Alan Menken – the same man who was responsible for the original soundtrack in the 1989 animation.
She said, “I’ve been a fan of The Little Mermaid since I was 5, so those new songs are very exciting to me, as well as the old.”
Speaking about her role in the film in general, Bailey added, “It’s so overwhelming, and beautiful, and breath-taking. I’m like, ‘Wow, am I really doing this?'”
Bailey is joined in the cast by World on Fire star Jonah Hauer-King, who will play Prince Eric.
Speaking to RadioTimes.com in December, Hauer-King expressed his joy at being cast, saying, “I’m so delighted to be part of it, I’ve loved the story since I was a kid so I’m delighted to be involved.”
No release date is currently scheduled for the remake, which comes just over 30 years after the original, but production is rumoured to be starting in April of this year.

From Comicbook: Little Mermaid Actor Promises Ariel Gets More Power in Disney's Remake
By AARON PERINE - January 19, 2020 09:01 pm EST
Disney is still releasing the live-action version of The Little Mermaid and star Daveed Diggs can’t wait for fans to see it. He talked to Variety about some changes to the story on the red carpet for the SAG Awards. Most of the recent live-action re-tellings of those popular Disney animated features have done some editing along the way. A lot of the racier jokes in both Aladdin and Dumbo got trimmed. Jungle Book had to grapple with a lot of the time period specific troubling content inherent in the tale it's based on as well. So, it would only make sense that there would have to be some commentary on agency in the new film. There has been much discussion about how much control Ariel has over her arc in The Little Mermaid and it sounds like the new adaptation will have some thoughts on it.
“Some of the updates they’ve done to the story are really important in terms of giving some more power back to Ariel,” Diggs began. “It’s fun to work on something that’s so intentional in the idea of ‘If we’re going to make this now, we’re not going to leave this alone as a time capsule.’ Let’s make it for now.”
Fans will have to take that on its face until more details rise to the surface. Those people have already been encouraged to enter this version with an open mind. Original Ariel actress Jodi Benson jumped to Halle Bailey’s defense when the younger actress was announced to be playing the leading role.
“The most important thing is to tell the story. And we have, as a family, we have raised our children, and for ourselves, that we don’t see anything that’s different on the outside,” Benson told a crowd at Florida Supercon convention.
“I think that the spirit of a character is what really matters. What you bring to the table in a character as far as their heart, and their spirit, is what really counts. And the outside package — cause let’s face it, I’m really, really old — and so when I’m singing ‘Part of Your World,’ if you were to judge me on the way that I look on the outside, it might change the way that you interpret the song. But if you close your eyes, you can still hear the spirit of Ariel.”

Megan Fox as Vanessa? Here from People: The Little Mermaid's New Sebastian Daveed Diggs Teases Live-Action Remake with 'Great' Cast Daveed Diggs opened up about the upcoming Disney live-action remake The Little Mermaid By Alexia Fernandez January 19, 2020 07:30 PM
The Little Mermaid‘s new Sebastian is excited about the new live-action film. Daveed Diggs, who originated the role of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton, spoke to PeopleTV about his upcoming role in the Disney film. “It’s great,” Diggs, 37, said while at the Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet on Sunday evening. “We’re sort of just getting started over there, too.”
Diggs is starring in the film with Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Megan Fox as Ursula’s human form and Idris Elba as King Triton.
Of the cast, Diggs told PeopleTV, “It’s just a great group. It’s really nice to be part of something… That’s the first movie I can remember being aware of before it came out [and] my being excited to go to the movie theater.” Diggs recalled seeing the film with his father at the historic movie palace Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland, California. “I just remember a big line of people waiting to get into the theater,” Diggs said.
Disney announced in July 2019 that Bailey — one half of the sister duo Chloe x Halle — was cast as Ariel. Diggs’ friend and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is working on new music for the live-action film. In November 2016, Miranda — who named his firstborn son Sebastian — told Vulture he’s “intimidated” to work on the movie, especially because of why Disney chose him. “Basically they were like, ‘There’s no bigger fan of this movie than you, and no bigger public supporter,'” Miranda said. The 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are airing live Sunday starting at 8 p.m. ET on TNT and TBS.

From The DisInsider: Exclusive: Disney Casting Ariel’s Sisters In ‘The Little Mermaid’
Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid is set to start production this April, and while that’s quickly coming, the studio is putting the finishing touches on the cast, which includes characters that had a brief appearance in the original animated film.
We have been told by our source that the studio is casting for Ariel’s sisters, Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista and Andrina. We have also been told that they are casting women of color for these roles.
As of now, we haven’t heard any names on the top of the studios wishlist, but it would be interesting if names like Zendaya, Keke Palmer, and Chloe Bailey (Halle’s sister) were considered.
Another tidbit I’ve heard but can not confirm is that Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beauty and the Beast) is being considered for the role of Athena, Ariel’s mother. However, that is and should be considered a rumor at this time.
Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid is set to star Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King (A Dog’s Way Home), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales star Javier Bardem as Ariel’s father King Triton, Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), Jacob Tremblay (Good Boys), and Awkwafina (Jumanji: The Next Level) who are attached to play Ursula, Ariel’s best friend Flounder, and Scuttle. Daveed Diggs (Soul) will voice Sebastian.
Alan Menken (Aladdin) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana) will be remastering the music from the original film, while also adding brand new songs, which would also include one a new solo for Prince Eric… that’s what we hear that is.
The Little Mermaid will be directed by Rob Marshall, and production is expected to begin in April in the Caribbean.

From ComicBook: The Little Mermaid Remake Reportedly Casting Ariel's Family
By AARON PERINE - January 26, 2020 11:44 pm EST
The Little Mermaid is scheduled to begin production this April and it looks like the live-action adaptation is ready to lock in some more of Ariel’s family. A report from The DisInsider says that the studio has begun casting Ariel’s sisters and that they are casting “women of color” for these roles. Some names mentioned in the report as part of a possible wishlist are Zendaya, Keke Palmer, and Halle Bailey’s sister Chloe. Another note in that reporting is the consideration of Gugu Mbatha-Raw for the role of Ariel’s mother Athena. Things are going to have to come together quickly as production gets underway in a few short months. There are going to be a few changes to the overall narrative of the story and Daveed Diggs is one of the actors in the live-action version to mention that change.
“Some of the updates they’ve done to the story are really important in terms of giving some more power back to Ariel,” Diggs explained. “It’s fun to work on something that’s so intentional in the idea of ‘If we’re going to make this now, we’re not going to leave this alone as a time capsule.’ Let’s make it for now.”
That’s not much to go on right now until more details come to light. People involved with the project are hoping that established fans will enter this new movie with an open mind. It also bears mentioning that previous live-action versions of Disney classics have had some of their more troublesome elements trimmed. Original Ariel actress Jodi Benson was quick to defend Halle Bailey when the younger actress got announced as Ariel this time around.
“The most important thing is to tell the story. And we have, as a family, we have raised our children, and for ourselves, that we don’t see anything that’s different on the outside,” Benson said at Florida Supercon convention last year.

Me too I'm very happy for the fact that Ariel's sisters are present in the movie. From IMDB: Q: Are you really involved with live-action Little Mermaid?
Lin-Manuel Miranda: Yeah, bro.
Q: And is it with...?
Lin-Manuel Miranda: It's with Alan Menken. So, we've written some new songs for the [movie]. [...] I was the first one to be like 'Hey, Little Mermaid is pretty dope. I'm not going to write the song that messes up Little Mermaid.' So, we were really careful about picking moments that we could really expand on and felt like they belonged in the same movie as everything else. I'm like the most allergic to gratuitously-added songs. So, yeah, they're in rehearsal right now in London.www.imdb.com/video/vi2792079129?listId=ls093993028

From DigitalSpy: Disney's Little Mermaid reboot getting new songs from Mary Poppins Returns' Lin-Manuel Miranda The Hamilton star shared the news at the Oscars.
BY JUSTIN HARP 10/02/2020 Lin-Manuel Miranda confirms he is writing new songs for Little Mermaid (ABC) by Digital Spy GB
Lin-Manuel Miranda is not going to miss his shot to write original songs for a Disney classic. Another shot, actually!
The Hamilton star has been involved in the planned live-action remake of the beloved animated movie The Little Mermaid, by collaborating with the movie's original composer Alan Menken.
Miranda offered an update on the remake while at the Oscars on Sunday (February 9), when he told red carpet host Billy Porter that he had written four new songs for the movie.
"I wrote four new songs with Menken," he confirmed. "They are in rehearsals right now. They'll be shooting starting in April, all summer."
The Little Mermaid is not Lin-Manuel's first collaboration with Disney. He received an Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe Award nomination for his song 'How Far I'll Go' from Moana.
He also contributed original music to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and starred as the lamplighter Jack in Mary Poppins Returns. The Broadway virtuoso is even involved with Disney TV as the voice of Gizmoduck on the new DuckTales.
Disney has cast Grown-ish star Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King as Ariel and Prince Eric, while Javier Bardem will play King Triton and Melissa McCarthy has been tipped to play Ursula the Sea Witch.
Harry Styles was previously in talks for the Prince Eric role, though he ultimately dropped out because he wanted to focus on his music.
"Everyone involved in it was amazing, so I think it's going to be great," he explained last autumn. "I'll enjoy watching it, I'm sure."

From ConnectRadio: Lin Manuel Miranda spills details on ‘The Little Mermaid’ remake on Oscar’s red carpet
Posted on February 10, 2020 by ABC News (LOS ANGELES) — It may have been raining buckets on Sunday’s Academy Awards, but Lin-Manuel Miranda was thinking of a place down where it’s wetter — the ocean — while walking the red carpet.
Miranda spilled several secrets about The Little Mermaid live action remake when pressed by Billy Porter.
“I wrote four new songs with [Alan] Menken,” Miranda proudly revealed with a grin.
Menken has composed the scores for eight Disney films, most notably for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Pocahontas — winning two Academy Awards for each film.
However, that wasn’t all the Hamilton star had to say on the red carpet about his new project.
He also hinted that production for The Little Mermaid stars soon, “They are in rehearsals right now. They’ll be shooting starting in April, all summer.” It is unknown when the film is slated to hit theaters.
This latest movie becomes Miranda’s third movie partnership with Disney. Before, he wrote the Oscar-nominated song “How Far I’ll Go” for Moana and also starred in Mary Poppins Returns. He also lends his vocal talents to the Ducktails reboot.
Miranda also gave a sneak peek about his upcoming directorial debut on Tick, Tick…BOOM!, a film adaption of the musical of the same name.
“Yeah, making Andrew Garfield sing and dance,” he laughed. “Andrew Garfield’s playing Jonathan Larson.”
Larson is best known for writing Rent, but died before the hit musical’s first Off Broadway preview performance.
Before handing the microphone back, Miranda also excitedly revealed that he, along with Porter, will be sitting in the same row as fellow theater-geek Idina Menzel.
Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

From Union Journalism: Entertainment The Little Mermaid live action remake: Relive the 90’s; Here’s everything you should know. Modified date: February 16, 2020 6:33 am EST February 16, 2020 6:33 am EST
With the courtesy of Walt Disney Studios and director Rob Marshall, Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ is expected to have a live-action musical remake.
The release date of the little mermaid remake is not yet confirmed, but the production is supposed to start in April 2020, so there is no official trailer available online.
The cast of underwater live-action-CGI extravaganza, the little mermaid, might include, Jonah Hauer King as prince Eric (romantic lead), Halle Bailey (previously seen in dog’s way home) as Ariel, Javier Bardem as king Triton, Melissa McCarthy as sea witch Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle the Seagull and Lin-Manuel Miranda is expected for voicing.
The plot may be or may not be similar to the Disney’s animated movie, which is a story of a mermaid with a mesmerizing voice who gave away her gift to an evil underwater witch, so she can experience the world outside water and also wanted to find her true love. This means mermaid princess ‘Ariel’ will trade her beautiful voice for a pair of legs to unite with the gorgeous price ‘Eric.’
If the pattern of other animated Disney movies remakes to the live-action film, like Aladdin and The Lion King, is followed, the little mermaid live-action remake can be expected to follow a similar trajectory in the 21st century.
The little mermaid is a story of a mermaid princess who is fascinated with life on land. So, to relive the 90s, Disney is in a phase of making live-action movies. And therefore, after 30 years, Disney is planning a live-action musical remake of the little mermaid, which might include many of the beloved songs of animated classic, like Sebastian the Crab’s ‘under the sea’ and ‘part of your world’ by original composers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and also will include some new songs from Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda.

From DailyMail: Melissa McCarthy hilariously recalls being mistaken for Amy Schumer as she begins rehearsals for live-action Little Mermaid By GLENN GARNER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM
PUBLISHED: 05:46 GMT, 17 February 2020 | UPDATED: 05:46 GMT, 17 February 2020
Melissa McCarthy has become one of the most recognizable comedic actress.
But the Bridesmaids star still has her encounters with those who just can't quite place her.
She recently recalled the time she was mistaken for Amy Schumer during a prank gone wrong.
The 49-year-old appeared Monday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where they reminisced about a bit they did during her last appearance.
It involved McCarthy going into her dry cleaners, where DeGeneres told her through an earpiece to pretend she's fainting.
The Gilmore Girls actress said: 'What I heard right before 911 was like, "Amy Schumer's gone down! Amy Schumer's on the ground!" And I was like, "Hey!"
'She called me Amy Schumer, which was, to me, my favorite part. What a compliment! But she called me Amy Schumer like four or five times.'
During her most recent appearance, McCarthy also discussed the live-action Little Mermaid, in which she plays Ursula.
She said: 'It's so fun. We're just in rehearsals, and it's been an absolute blast. Stepping into the world of [director] Rob Marshall, it's like a fever dream.
'Like, I just went to London for a week, and I'm like, "I don't get to go to dance camp for a week." And all day, he's like, "Do you want to slide down this 40-foot clamshell?" I'm like, "Yes! Of course I do. What are you, crazy?" It's just been wildly creative.'
McCarthy has mostly played coy since it was announced in June that she was in talks to play the infamous sea witch.
Although McCarthy sounds like an excellent choice for the part, some fans were not entirely sold.
Given the character was inspired by famed drag legend Divine, many were rooting for a drag queen to get the role.
Other fans rallied behind Lizzo for the part after the Truth Hurts artist campaigned for the role on Twitter in full cosplay.
Queen Latifah recently portrayed the character for ABC's live musical version of the animated Disney classic.
McCarthy told Variety of Latifah's casting news: 'She can do anything. I’ll be like (raises hands) both hands on chin watching her.'
