From BusinessInsider: Here are the actors people were most interested in this year, according to Google
Claudia Willen December 13, 2019
Google released its “Year in Search” list, highlighting music, movies, and more that people searched for in 2019. Jussie Smollett, Kevin Hart, and Lori Loughlin topped the list of actors. Visit Insider’s homepage for more stories. Google’s “Year in Search” list revealed some of the top trending searches in categories like artists, movies, and music.
The top three actors people appeared to be most interested in over the course of 2019 were Jussie Smollett, Kevin Hart, and Lori Loughlin.
To be clear, these aren’t the most-searched for actors; Rather, they’re the searches that saw a spike in Google traffic over a period of time in 2019.
Insider laid out this year’s top 10 trending actors on Google in descending order.
10. Maisie Williams received buzz after her heroic performance in the series finale of HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
Actor Maisie Williams astounded audiences with her performance as Arya Stark in HBO’s final season of “Game of Thrones,” in which she defeats the largest threat to Westeros: the Night King.
Williams began filming the series when she was 11 years old and was widely viewed as the Stark family’s tomboy younger sister, who happened to be skilled with a sword. By season eight, the English actress proved that her character had evolved into an independent protector of the realm, and fans were rooting for her along the way.
The 22-year-old actor was nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series at the 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards.
9. Halle Bailey, member of R&B duo Chloe x Halle, was cast as Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid.”
Halle Bailey will play the mermaid in the 2019 remake of “The Little Mermaid.” Disney Halle Bailey, a member of R&B duo Chloe x Halle, will play Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of the 1989 animated film, “The Little Mermaid.”
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance – plus a glorious singing voice – all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” director Rob Marshall said in a statement to Variety.
However, not everyone was thrilled about the casting. The hashtag “#NotMyAriel” trended on Twitter after Disney announced the black actress’ casting.
“I think that the spirit of a character is what really matters. What you bring to the table in a character as far as their heart, and their spirit, is what really counts,” the actress told Variety at the Power of Young Hollywood gala.
8. Syfy’s “Van Helsing” actor Kate Beckinsale posted a bikini photo and responded to the negative comments.
Kate Beckinsale posted an Instagram photo from Nobu Los Cabos, posing in a strappy black bikini and heels in November 2019.
“I feel like you are having a mid life crisis or something,” one user commented.
The 46-year-old English actress replied, “Oh! I think that’s because you’re an annoying a——.”
Another user commented on a different bikini photo of Beckinsale, calling her “too old” and saying she was “looking for attention.”
The “Underworld” actress commented back, “I don’t know you and I don’t know who has made you feel that if you get older you have no value, can’t be attractive or sexy or have a relationship with your body that isn’t only self loathing, but as one female to another, don’t let any of that noise bother you.”
7. Actor Joaquin Phoenix starred in the 2019 film, “Joker.”
The actor played the titular character in the 2019 film “Joker.” The controversial movie made history when it became the first R-rated film to surpass $1 billion at the box office.
“You can either say here’s somebody who, like everybody, needed to be heard and understood and to have a voice. Or you can say this is somebody that disproportionately needs a large quantity of people to be fixated on him. His satisfaction comes as he stands in amongst the madness,” Phoenix told Vanity Fair.
6. Rami Malek played “Queen” singer Freddie Mercury in the 2018 film “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
The actor’s role as frontman Freddie Mercury received high marks, and he won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award – just to name a few.
Malek spent a year preparing for the role, taking singing and piano lessons.
“It was pure elation and euphoria. And then the reservations kicked in. What I knew I needed was time because you’re asking me to embody and encapsulate a human being who is, quite honestly, otherworldly. He is almost superhuman,” Malek told Hollywood Reporter.
5. Keanu Reeves will play a tumbleweed in “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.”
The “John Wick” and “The Matrix” actor will play a wise tumbleweed in the 2020 Spongebob film. The actor’s fans took to Twitter to express their excitement about the role, and even dubbed 2019 “the year of Keanu Reeves.”
Reeves also appeared in “Toy Story 4” and “John Wick 3: Parabellum.”
4. “Desperate Housewives” actor Felicity Huffman was arrested for allegedly paying someone to correct her daughter’s college admission exam.
Emmy Award-winning actor Felicity Huffman was sentenced to 14 days in prison in October 2019 for allegedly paying an SAT proctor $15,000 to correct her daughter’s exam.
Huffman was also required to participate in 250 hours of community service, subjected to one year of surveillance, and fined $30,000.
She had been arrested in March 2019 for her alleged involvement in the scandal and was released on a $250,000 bail.
3. ABC’s “Full House” actor Lori Loughlin faces a 40-year sentence after her alleged involvement in the college admissions scandal.
Like Huffman, the “Full House” actress drew attention this year for her alleged involvement in the Varsity Blues scandal.
She may have ended up higher than Huffman on the list, however, because her two daughters were more well-known. Her youngest daughter, Olivia Jade, is a beauty YouTuber who had appeared apathetic toward attending college on resurfaced videos.
2. Kevin Hart stepped down from hosting the 2019 Oscars after homophobic tweets resurfaced online.
Hart then made headlines again later in the year after getting into a car accident. He suffered a “major back injury” from the incident.
1. Jussie Smollett’s alleged assault investigation drew nationwide attention.
Smollett told police that he was beaten by two men who looped a noose around his neck and threw vile comments at him on January 29. Chicago police later claimed Smollett arranged the attack, and charged the actor with filing a false report.
Prosecutors dropped the case in March and Smollett has maintained his innocence, although he agreed to let the authorities keep his $10,000 bail.

From Evening Standard: Jonah Hauer-King interview: ‘Waiting tables at Zédel was great for performance’
The actor will soon have a starring role in the live action remake of The Little Mermaid
Gabriel Tate Thursday 12 December 2019 12:12
"It’s very strange. I’m not sure how influential I am…” Jonah Hauer-King is sipping water in Channel 5’s Camden offices, mulling his position as a mainstay of the Evening Standard’s Progress 1000 list of influential Londoners for the past three years. It won’t feel so unlikely for much longer. Having established his reputation in the West End (opposite Kenneth Branagh in The Entertainer) and on primetime TV (BBC One wartime drama World on Fire), a starring role in The Little Mermaid will soon give the world a closer look at a rising star.
If he’s actually in it, that is: he’s not allowed to talk about playing romantic lead Prince Eric in Disney’s latest live-action remake until the company confirms what has long been reported online (the only other subject off-limits is Arsenal, whose predicament the lifelong north Londoner finds too grim to contemplate).
Instead, we dance around the subject and discuss the potential impact of a appearing in such a movie from a cinematic powerhouse. “I have friends who have had experiences like that,” he nods. “Their advice was that stardom is not why you’re doing the job, so try not to think so much about what it may or may not bring. Just get your head down!”
That’s unlikely to be a problem for this self-effacing, thoughtful 24-year-old who, despite graduating just two years ago (from Cambridge, with a first in theology and religious studies), seems to treat his acting career as a further opportunity for study. Everything offers lessons, obstacles to overcome and opportunities for personal growth; I half-expect him to start taking notes during our conversation.
Before mermaids and talking crabs though, comes Channel 5’s Agatha and the Curse of Ishtar. Taking a slice of Agatha Christie’s real life and turning it into a murder mystery, the one-off drama finds the recently divorced mystery writer (Lyndsey Marshal) in 1928 Iraq, where she meets Max Mallowan (Hauer-King), the budding archaeologist 14 years her junior who became her second husband.
They are swiftly embroiled in the murderous machinations of diplomats, businessmen and locals fighting over Iraq’s treasures and a newly discovered oilfield. Wry and self-aware without ever descending into camp, it is, reckons Hauer-King, “almost a buddy comedy in the way Max and Agatha go on an adventure and experience all these eccentric characters together”.
His is a performance of gauche and utterly winning charm, a far cry from World on Fire’s lovelorn, tormented translator-turned-army officer Harry Chase. The standout of an ensemble including Lesley Manville, Sean Bean and Helen Hunt, Hauer-King established his leading man credentials on the wartime drama and is looking forward to more. “I know I’ll do the next one or two [series], then it’s slightly open, which is great.” Hauer-King is the son of Debra Hauer, a therapist and former theatre producer, and London restaurateur Jeremy King, whose portfolio includes the Wolseley, Delaunay and Brasserie Zédel.
Hauer-King waited tables at Zédel for six months and loved it. “It’s great for people watching and performance, because you’re reacting to a table: if they’re up for a good night, you’re helping them along on that energy, if they’re in a foul mood you’re trying to take the sting out of that.”
More formative still were the regular theatre trips with his mother, although she never pushed him into his career. “She wanted to give me space to decide for myself, which I did when I was about 14. She’s aware of the uncertainty and anxiety of this job, but she’s always been a great support.”
It was in a school production on the Edinburgh Fringe that he fell in love with acting as day job rather than hobby, and where he was spotted by his now-agent. Six months of auditions without recalls or feedback ensued, forcing a rethink and a return to education. He juggled studies at Cambridge with acting gigs, notably writing essays backstage during a run as conscientious objector Frank in the Garrick’s 2016 production of The Entertainer, “the most exciting job I’ve done”.
Hauer-King’s progress looks seamless from a distance, the trajectory from north London to Eton to Cambridge to screen shared with Tom Hiddleston and Eddie Redmayne among others. But he is constantly checking his privilege, fully engaged with the contentious issues around access to the arts and volunteering with Wac Arts, a performing arts school in Belsize Park set up to help disadvantaged and disengaged young people.
“These conversations need to be had,” he says. “You have to put your hand up and say, I’ve had so many opportunities others haven’t had. The arts aren’t dispensable, they should be readily available to everyone. It’s not just about getting people to be actors or whatever, but about what an education in performing arts can give you as a person, helping people who are self-conscious and shy to come out of their shell.”
Hauer-King says he was neither especially confident nor precocious as a child, the spearman or footsoldier in infant school productions.
As he heads off for his favourite off-screen activity — “walking east to west along the river, headphones on” — I can’t resist mentioning my son’s casting as Joseph in his school Nativity. He looks as delighted as if my son was one of his own.
“Just stay true to yourself,” he counsels, laughing. But if Hauer-King keeps taking his own advice then even he will have to acknowledge his growing influence.

From Rotten Tomatoes: YEARLY KETCHUP: THE FRESHEST MOVIE DEVELOPMENT NEWS OF 2019 A MONTH-BY-MONTH ROUND-UP OF THE BEST NEWS TO COME OUT OF HOLLYWOOD THIS YEAR. by Greg Dean Schmitz | December 27, 2019 | Few industries enjoy taking really, really long extended holiday vacations quite like Hollywood, and when we get to this time of the year, there’s rarely much in the realm of “movie development news” to discuss. So, this week and next, we’re going to review 12 of the year’s top stories, presented to you in monthly chronology. The year-in-review begins with the “Fresh Developments” of the year.
JANUARY: MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 AND 8 TO FILM BACK-TO-BACK
There are lots of long-running movie franchises, but in many of them, the cast changes over time (the MCU and the Rocky/Creed franchises being two exceptions to the rule). In January, we first learned that, in 2022, Tom Cruise will hit movie #8 in the Mission: Impossible franchise, as Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 are being developed for release in the summers of 2021 and 2022, respectively. The two movies will be shot back-to-back to ensure their releases within a year of each other, and also to make it easier to secure not just Tom Cruise, but also his supporting cast, which may include Fallout cast like Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, etc. Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie will work on these sequels, hoping to match what he’s achieved with the last two films, 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (Certified Fresh at 93%), and last year’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout (Certified Fresh at 97%). Mission: Impossible 7 is now scheduled for July 23, 2021 (the week after LeBron James’ Space Jam 2), and Mission: Impossible 8 is scheduled for August 5, 2022. The first new franchise cast member to be announced for Mission: Impossible 7 was British actress Hayley Atwell, who probably remains best known for playing Marvel’s Peggy Carter, as seen in both Captain America: The First Avenger, and in the much-missed ABC series, Agent Carter. There are no details yet as to where the Mission: Impossible franchise might go after 2022, but Tom Cruise will turn 60 on July 3 of that year, so Mission: Impossible 8 might be his last opportunity to hang off the sides of airplaines and jump off of skyscrapers.
FEBRUARY: AQUAMAN GETTING SEQUEL IN 2022 AND HORROR SPINOFF FOR THE TRENCH
With over $1.14 billion earned at the global box office, Aquaman became the highest-grossing DC Comics movie (worldwide) ever in early 2019, even above The Dark Knight (though Joker came close to beating Aquaman at $1.063 billion). That was quite an achievement for a character long considered a joke (including a long-running story arc on HBO’s Entourage). Those numbers also made it super obvious that Aquaman would get a sequel and that’s exactly what’s happening, with one of the first film’s screenwriters now working on the sequel. Aquaman director James Wan is on board as producer, but it’s unclear as to whether he will also direct the sequel. Warner Bros didn’t stop there, though, as they also hired two “newbie” screenwriters to work on a horror movie spinoff for The Trench, about the ” deadly amphibious creatures seen attacking the hero and his love, Mera” in Aquaman. The main characters from Aquaman are not expected to appear in The Trench, which suggests that the “horror movie” may instead focus on surface dwellers who come into contact with the monsters separate from any involvement with Atlantis.
MARCH: CAST ANNOUNCED FOR CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S AMBITIOUS ACTION MOVIE TENET
Although we obviously knew what Dunkirk was about way before release (the title gives it away), director Christopher Nolan also has a history of starting his movies with mystery premises (we’re thinking here of Inception and Interstellar in particular). In March, pretty much the only thing we knew about Nolan’s next film (revealed in May to be called Tenet) was that Warner Bros had scheduled it for release on July 17, 2020 (up against Bob’s Burgers: The Movie). In March, we learned that Nolan had cast John David Washington (Denzel’s son and the star of Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman) as the film’s lead, as well as Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki (Ayesha from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). Since then, the cast has expanded to include Kenneth Branagh, Clémence Poésy (In Bruges), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron), and frequent Nolan collaborator Michael Caine. Most recently, the first trailer for Tenet debuted online just last week in a surprise move from Warner Bros., and it included a six-minute prologue preview attached to IMAX screenings of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
APRIL: SHAZAM! 2 TAKES OFF, AND DWAYNE JOHNSON GETS BLACK ADAM GREENLIGHT TOO
After this year’s Shazam! had only been in theaters for a week, Warner Bros. went ahead and announced that they were moving forward with plans for a sequel, even despite the film opening much lower ($53 million domestically) than similar movies like Captain Marvel ($153 million) and Aquaman ($67.8 million). We don’t know the premise of the sequel yet, but the mid-credits tease give a clue about the possible villain. A few weeks ago, we learned that Shazam! 2 is now scheduled for release on April 1st, 2022. This news came after Dwayne Johnson’s long-in-development Black Adam movie (based on the popular Shazam! villain) will start filming soon and is scheduled for release on December 22, 2021. The timing suggests that the Black Adam movie might directly lead to Dwayne Johnson also reprising the role in Shazam! 2. Warner Bros. is also directly positioning Shazam! 2 against Marvel movies, as Sony’s Spider-Verse sequel comes out a week later (4/8/2022) and Black Panther II comes out a month later (5/6/2022), followed by DC Super Pets on 5/20/2022.
MAY: ROBERT PATTINSON TAKES OVER THE BATMAN
Although some superhero movies are “slow burns” when it comes to news, others, especially the biggest movies (Avengers, or in this case, Batman) can happen in what feels like a relatively brief amount of time. Specifically, just eight months ago, we knew nothing about who would be in the 2021 reboot The Batman (6/25/2021). That all started to change in mid-May, beginning with the news that the shortlist included Nicholas Hoult and Robert Pattinson, the latter of whom secured the role two weeks later. In the meantime, details started to trickle forth about who the villains in The Batman would be. In September, as the Joker hype express was well under way, it was confirmed that there were no plans for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker to crossover with Robert Pattinson’s Batman (which is not to say that the Joker won’t be in Batman movies, just not Phoenix’s specific version). Two weeks later, there was talk about Jonah Hill possibly taking on a villain role, which ultimately didn’t work out, as both the Penguin and Riddler went to other actors. In October, Paul Dano (Love and Mercy) landed the role of the Riddler and Zoe Kravitz became the next actress to portray Selina Kyle, A.K.A. Catwoman. Last month, The Batman found two more of its ensemble cast members as Colin Farrell (who also played the villain Bullseye in Daredevil) was cast as the Penguin, and Andy Serkis was cast as Bruce Wayne’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth. And lastly, there was also news last month suggesting that Warner Bros. might give villains like Catwoman, The Penguin, and The Riddler their own Joker-style spinoff movies.
JUNE: DISNEY BEGINS CASTING LIVE-ACTION THE LITTLE MERMAID
Walt Disney Pictures has yet to announce a release date (or even a release year) for its live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, but we can be fairly certain that it’s actually happening, because the studio made lots of “splashes” about it this year. Going into July, we had already known for a while that The Little Mermaid will be directed by Rob Marshall as his next Disney project after last year’s Mary Poppins Returns. The casting news started in late June with word that Melissa McCarthy was in early talks to play the evil, tentacled sea witch Ursula. (It’s not yet known if Ursula will be fully CGI, or possibly part live action with animated tentacles.) This was soon followed by the casting of Awkwafina (Ocean’s Eight) and Jacob Tremblay (Room) as the voices of the animated animal characters Scuttle the seagull and Flounder (who’s not a flounder), respectively. Next up — and again, this was all basically in the same week — was the casting of Ariel herself, who will be played by R&B singer Halle Bailey, who, with her sister Chloe, makes up the singing group Chloe x Bailey. For a while, Harry Styles of One Direction was also in talks to play the romantic lead Prince Eric, but that role ultimately went to relatively unknown actor Jonah Hauer-King.
JULY: MARVEL MAKES MASSIVE PHASE FOUR ANNOUNCEMENT AT COMIC-CON
In recent years, Marvel Studios has sometimes stayed relatively quiet at San Diego Comic-Con, but that was definitely not the case in 2019, when they had arguably the biggest superhero movie news event of all time. Part of the reason for that has to do with the way that Phase Four will involve not just movies, but also various shows on the Disney+ streaming service as well. Without getting into every detail (since doing so would involve a column as long as this one for the entire year), we’ll just mention that the (movie) announcements included: Black Widow (5/1/2020), The Eternals (11/6/2020), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2/12/2021), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (5/7/2021), Thor: Love and Thunder (11/5/2021), Blade (presumably Phase Five), Fantastic Four (Phase 5), and X-Men (Phase 5). In August, we also found out that Kit Harrington will be joining The Eternals as long-time Avengers member Black Knight, and that Black Panther II is scheduled for May 6, 2022.
AUGUST: GUILLERMO DEL TORO’S STAR-STUDDED NIGHTMARE ALLEY CASTS UP
After years and years of attempts to get several different projects off the ground, director Guillermo del Toro is ultimately using his post-Shape of Water clout to get something completely different going, namely a remake of the 1947 carnival thriller Nightmare Alley (Fresh at 100%). By the time August rolled around, seven-time Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper had already been attached for the role originally played by Tyrone Power for some time, but that month, we finally saw the casting of two of his female co-stars. Cate Blanchett, who’s a seven time Academy Award nominee and two time winner (for Blue Jasmine and The Aviator) ultimately landed a key supporting role, while Toni Collette, who received an Academy Award nomination herself for The Sixth Sense, secured the female lead role of the psychiatrist and hypnotist who teams up with Cooper’s carnival con man. Later, in September, a key role also went to Rooney Mara. Fox Searchlight is expected to schedule Nightmare Alley sometime in prime “awards season” in late 2020.
SEPTEMBER: SONY AND MARVEL COME TO TERMS ON SPIDER-MAN DEAL
You may remember that last summer, there was a big uproar about the fact that talks between Sony Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures (and their Marvel Studios) had fallen apart over future Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reportedly, Disney and Marvel had wanted a 50% cut of future Spider-Man movies in exchange for Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios working on the movies for Sony. After all of the attention and feedback from the fans, the relevant parties started up talks again, resulting in the big news in September that Sony and Marvel would indeed work together on a third solo Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland, to be released on July 16, 2021 and directed by Jon Watts, who directed the first two. The financial compromise calls for Disney to receive 25% of the film’s profits (leaving 75% for Sony), down from their original request of 50%. As part of the new deal, Tom Holland will also appear as Spider-Man in one more MCU movie, the title and premise of which hasn’t been revealed yet.
OCTOBER: JOHN WICK IS GETTING HIS OWN CINEMATIC UNIVERSE
When John Wick was first released in 2014, it became something of a pop culture phenomenon that helped Keanu Reeves stage a mid-career comeback and led to two sequels (thus far) and continuing box office success. Lionsgate scheduled John Wick: Chapter 4 for release on May 21, 2021 a while ago, and in October, we learned that Lionsgate is not limiting their John Wick plans to just Keanu Reeves movies. Instead, the studio is moving forward with plans for a female-centric John Wick spinoff called Ballerina about “a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family.” Although the premise doesn’t specify a nationality for the Ballerina, there is something of a trope involving Russian ballerinas who become super spies or assassins (mainly we’re thinking here of both Red Sparrow and Marvel’s Black Widow). The Ballerina character was briefly seen in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, played by newcomer Unity Phelan, but it’s possible/likely that another actress will star in Ballerina. And then, earlier this month, Warner Bros. effectively did something huge that raised the profile of John Wick: Chapter 4 at the same time as it directly competed with it, announcing that they had scheduled their own Keanu Reeves sequel, The Matrix 4, for May 21, 2021, the same release date as John Wick: Chapter 4. Both Carrie-Anne Moss and Reeves are attached to return in their roles as Trinity and Neo in that film.
NOVEMBER: SPIDER-VERSE 2 AND BLACK PANTHER II ANNOUNCED FOR 2022
As mentioned above, Marvel Studios put on a big, big panel at San Diego Comic-Con this past summer, but the dates were only specific for 2020 and 2021. Since then, Marvel has also announced a release date of May 6, 2022 for Black Panther II, but November’s biggest news story painted an image of 2022 that promises an ambitious slate comparable to that of 2019. Sony Pictures has confirmed plans for a second animated movie starring the Miles Morales version of the web-crawler as seen in last year’s Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The Spider-Verse sequel is now scheduled for April 8, 2022, just shy of a month before Black Panther II on May 6, 2022. Although they’re not yet dated, two other Marvel movies that might be scheduled for 2022 are the Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali and the Fantastic Four movie mentioned at Comic-Con that would finally bring Stan Lee’s original Marvel super team into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As for what we might see in Spider-Verse 2, the final scenes of the first movie did hint at both Spider-Man 2099 and the finger-pointing Spider-Man ’67.
DECEMBER: KUMAIL NANJIANI’S ETERNALS BODY BLOWS UP THE INTERNET LIKE BABY YODA
Like any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie with pretty much an entirely new cast, next year’s The Eternals (11/6/2020) has been the focus of multiple casting news stories this year. Individually, we’re not sure any of them would have been enough to make our list of top stories for the year. And then, Kumail Nanjiani posted the images you can see on his Instagram account. When Nanjiani was first cast in The Eternals, it was probably safe to assume that he would basically look like the Kumail Nanjiani we’ve grown accustomed to seeing in other projects like The Big Sick, Stuber, and HBO’s Silicon Valley, so it was something of a shock to see him looking absolutely shredded. His co-stars in The Eternals include Angelina Jolie (Thena), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Gemma Chan (Sersi), and Game of Thrones stars Richard Madden (Ikaris) and Kit Harrington (The Black Knight), but we haven’t heard yet about whether they’re that buff yet. Also, yeah, this December has been kind of a slow news month.

From Cheatsheet: HOME / ENTERTAINMENT / Halle Bailey Reveals the 1 Thing She Hopes to Bring to Her 'Little Mermaid' Character
Bre Williams | MORE ARTICLES January 16, 2020
Halle Bailey is ready to make a splash in the upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
The 19-year-old singer and actress will star as Ariel, the rebellious royal daughter set on becoming human at a dreadful price.
Though she’s faced backlash for being a person of color portraying the beloved Disney princess, Bailey hasn’t let that get in the way of her plans to bring something new and refreshing to the character.
Bailey couldn’t be more excited to play the iconic Disney princess
2020 is going to be an unforgettable year for Bailey.
Not only will she and sister, Chloe Bailey, drop their highly anticipated second studio album, Ungodly Hour, but the singer is also getting ready to embark on her very first major movie role as Ariel.
Disney announced the casting decision in July 2019. Shortly after the news broke, Bailey took to social media to share her excitement.
“Dream come true…” Bailey tweeted along with an illustration of an Indian-American Ariel by artist Dylan Bonner.

“It’s so overwhelming, and beautiful, and breathtaking,” she recently told PopSugar. “I’m like, ‘Wow, am I really doing this?'”
Bailey went on to reveal that she’s most looking forward to the music. She says the movie will feature classics from the original movie as well as a few new songs written by composer Alan Menken.
“I’ve been a fan of The Little Mermaid since I was 5, so those new songs are very exciting to me, as well as the old,” the songstress said. “That’s probably like, ding, ding, ding! My number one.”
Though she can’t wait to embody everyone’s favorite underwater princess, Bailey went on the share the one thing she hopes to bring to this character that will make her portrayal stand out.
“Freshness,” she says. “Just being authentically me. It’s amazing that the directors have been so forward in asking me to show my true self. . . that’s been a really fun growing experience.”
Bailey’s casting has been met with harsh criticism
While many people have praised Bailey for being the first person of color to take on the role of Ariel, others took offense to this casting decision.
After Disney announced the history-making news, many began flooding social media with comments criticizing casting directors for giving the role to someone they believe does not resemble the animated character.
Some even went as far as creating the hashtag #NotMyAriel and threatened to boycott the film.
Disgruntled Little Mermaid fans expressed anger and disappointment over Disney replacing the white cartoon character with a black live-action Ariel — ultimately “ruining” their childhood.
As #NotMyAriel made its way through Twitter, many people, including celebrities, began speaking up against the hate, calling out those turning a blind eye to diversity.
Stars such as Halle Berry, Janelle Monaé, Mariah Carey, and many more showed their support for Bailey’s casting by sharing how much they’re looking forward to seeing the singer on the big screen.
Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel, even spoke out against the backlash while showing support for Bailey.
“The most important thing is to tell the story,” she said during the Florida Supercon convention in July 2019. “I think that the spirit of a character is what really matters. What you bring to the table in a character as far as their heart, and their spirit, is what really counts.”
The following month, Bailey also spoke out about the #NotMyAriel backlash, revealing that she was not going to let the negativity stop her from living out her dream.
“I’m just grateful,” she said. “I don’t pay attention to the negativity; I just feel like this role is something bigger than me. And it’s going to be beautiful. I’m just so excited to be a part of it.”
