From TheDigitalWise: Zendaya Might Be Landing As Ariel In Disney’s Little Mermaid And We Have A Perfect Reason For This!
So Disney is making its classic movies into live action and one of the movies is expected to be The Little Mermaid. Who will be the little mermaid? How about Zendaya?
Zendaya has previously denied rumors that she won’t be playing Ariel. Recently enough on June 17, the cast of Spider-Man: Far from Home assembled in London to promote their movie which is set to release on July 2. And she was spotted her hair dyed red. I mean proper red. RED. These photos have not only knocked down everyone but also hopes high that she is gonna be The Little Mermaid. Wohooo!
Check out the photos because you might find Zendaya as goddess than that of a mermaid. So she has dyed her hair red but is it really for playing Ariel? Basically, MJ is also redhead in the Spider-Man comics. But the movie’s filming has ended long ago and the third run is also yet to be announced. So, she simply dyed her hair red can be a possible answer to Twitter but fans have gone crazy demanding to play Ariel.
Twitter was roaring on her dying her hair red and demanding Disney to cast her as Ariel but the actress took out to Twitter and said she was simply paying homage to the comic-book Spider-man lead, Mary Jane Watson. So yeah, people deny the rumors when they are cornered.
So what if Zendaya doesn’t play Ariel? Will we be disappointed? Of course, we will! Disney, please cast Zendaya. She might be the most iconic Ariel ever!

Well, here's the thing, we know Zendaya is playing the role of MJ Watson or at least, a version of her in the latest Spiderman movie series. So it's far more probable that her red hair is a nod to MJ rather then Ariel. And honestly, I would expect Zendaya is too busy with the Spiderman movies to actually be available to appear in another live action movie at this time.
Honestly, it's far less important to me who gets the role of Ariel, as long as the production works. And as I've stated before, I'd prefer an unknown actress to play the part, Zendaya isn't unknown, so that's the main reason I'd prefer her not to be Ariel.

I think a popular actress for Ariel could be also a good choice. From Variety: Melissa McCarthy in Talks to Play Ursula in Live-Action ‘Little Mermaid’ (EXCLUSIVE)
Melissa McCarthy may be ready to help some poor unfortunate souls in Disney’s live-action version of “The Little Mermaid.”
Sources tell Variety that while the deal is not yet completed, McCarthy is in early talks to play the sea witch Ursula in the live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.”
As Disney preps its live-action version of the undersea tale, there’s a lot of buzz about the cast. Disney and the production team behind it are looking to make contemporary and compelling casting choices, while still paying homage to the beloved animated original.
“Mary Poppins Returns” director Rob Marshall is helming. The film will incorporate the original songs from the 1989 animated hit as well as new tunes from Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is also producing the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca. David Magee wrote the script.
Jessica Virtue and Allison Erlikhman are overseeing for the studio.
The original version followed a mermaid princess who sought to meet a human prince on land. Menken wrote the music, including the Oscar-winning “Under the Sea,” “Part of Your World” and “Kiss the Girl.” As for McCarthy, the multi-talented actress will get her chance at singing “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” one of the classic villain songs in the Disney archive.
Adapting classic animated pics into live-action features is a strategy that has been going strong for the studio, most recently with its live-action remake of “Aladdin,” which has grossed $820 million worldwide. The highly anticipated remake of “The Lion King” opens next month.
This will mark one of the first family-friendly roles for McCarthy, who has built her career on adult comedies including “Spy,” “The Heat” and “Bridesmaids,” which earned her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. She was most recently seen in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” a dramatic turn that also earned her an Oscar nomination, this time for best actress.
McCarthy is repped by CAA and MGMT Entertainment.

From The Hollywood Reporter: Melissa McCarthy in Talks to Play Ursula in Disney's Live-Action 'Little Mermaid'
For the new iteration of the fairytale, Alan Menken will team with Lin-Manuel Miranda on the music. Melissa McCarthy is going under the sea.
The actress is in talks to play Ursula, one of the biggest villains in Disney’s pantheon, for the studio’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Rob Marshall is directing.
The movie is the next in line in Disney's strategy of remaking its classic animated movies into live-action (or in the case of the upcoming The Lion King, photo-realistic) features. Aladdin, released in May, crossed the $800 million mark around a week ago.
Ron Clements and John Musker were behind the 1989 original, which won best original song and score for Alan Menken. For the new iteration of the fairytale, Menken will team with Lin-Manuel Miranda on the music.
The animated movie loosely retold the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen and told of a mermaid named Ariel who yearns to be human after she falls in love with a prince. She makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula who grants her wish but takes her voice.
Miranda will produce alongside Marc Platt, who worked with Marshall on Returns and exec produced Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin remake.
McCarthy, who is repped by CAA, will next be seen in New Line’s crime drama The Kitchen and action comedy Superintelligence.

From Comicbook.com: The Little Mermaid Rumored to Cast Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay in Key Roles
Following Friday’s news Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters star Melissa McCarthy is in talks to join Disney’s live-action re-imagining of 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid as Ursula, former Variety reporter Kris Tapley has revealed McCarthy’s potential co-stars.
Tapley names Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Jumanji: The Next Level) for helpful bird friend and human treasures expert Scuttle, and Jacob Tremblay (Room, The Predator) for Flounder, the tropical fish best friend of Ariel, the mermaid princess who yearns to head above the surface and explore the human world.

The lead role has yet to be cast, but Disney is said to be eyeing Spider-Man: Far From Home star Zendaya. The 22-year-old actress and singer, who co-starred in hit musical The Greatest Showman and earlier starred in Shake It Up and K.C. Undercover for Disney Channel, recently dyed her hair a familiar shade of red, fueling speculation she’ll next go under the sea.
Zendaya says the red hair is her way of paying homage to famously red-headed Spider-Man supporting player Mary Jane Watson — her Marvel Cinematic Universe character, Michelle Jones, goes by “MJ” — but the star hinted she would dye her hair should she become a Disney princess.
Speaking to MTV in October, Zendaya said her involvement in The Little Mermaid were “just rumors, for now.” Asked if she would dye her hair red, Zendaya answered, “We’ll see.”
Zendaya earlier expressed her interest in starring as the underwater princess: when approached by Variety about potentially taking the role, she answered, “Yeah, why wouldn’t I?”

IT'S OFFICIAL! ChloexHalle singer Halle Bailey has been chosen to play Ariel in the new live action version directed by Rob Marshall and co-produced by Lin Manuel Miranda! Now I feel a sense of relief and at the same time surprised and shocked! After seeing so many fans petition for Madelaine Petsch due to her looks but her voice wasn't giving the qualities. People also expected Jodi Benson's own daughter Delaney to play her! Here's hoping for interesting merchandise to collect with this new Ariel while I still keep the animated and Broadway versions to my heart.

I'm really excited for Halle! Y'all should listen to her voice, she sounds like she could sing a really fantastic Part of Your World - her voice just makes me smile so bright, and that's the perfect quality for Ariel!
and what a beautiful opportunity for representation! I grew up my whole life being able to portray most of the Disney Princesses because most of them were white. Many little princesses out there have maybe one or none at all that they can see themselves in. It's wonderful that lots of young girls out there will now be able to see themselves in a character like Ariel! <3

Nice to see you here Ms. Lara In fact I CAME here to see your reaction (lest you did not say I deserve the part) I have SOME thoughts on this First the reaction specifically THE BACKLASH If the "enlightened" individuals at Disney let a Broadway version of film PLAY for as log as OTHERS HAD...…………………………………..chances are we would have see a black latino or Asian(AT LEAST ONCE if mot all three) play our favorite redheaded mermaid If THAT happened and it was received well...…………………….the reaction MAYBE less "hateful" And I stated they should make ERIC a man of color as I stated this means mermaids are NOT as humans (this could have been done in B & b BOTH VERSIONS and YET...…………………………………………………………………) And the "Actress" playing Scuttle? Pardon my ignorance but is she a comedian or what other then being Asian After seeing pics of Hallie Baily (NOT BERRIE another subject one could start here) yes she is a decent enough singer actress if not phenominal choice for Ariel and as for my reaction this is more of a huh reaction I have little issue with this decision True story in college during an economics/market class we were assigned to groups and a girl in the group had a side profile that was QUITE familiar After seeing LM for the umpteenth time in theaters (this WAS 1990) saw Ariel's profile and realized The girl in question in my group was black Forehead to nose...………………….. (I know Ariel like the back of my hand gang) AND less tolerance for criticsim to poor Ariel (Hence THIS decision for it's gonna ) Someone on you tube called Ariel a Gold Digger SO what did you think I did? Other issues are with Disney If you saw a recent post with Zig and Sharko's Marina does Marina remind you of ANYONE? ? The cartoon has multiple views on you tube and Disney has not done anything Put The word Frozen on something OR challenge the "tolorence" of B & b you are branded the "anti Christ" Could go on all day BUT believe it or not Got a life (miserable BUT...…………………………) Will just have to see how this plays out Anyone know how Jodi Benson took this?

aw! well I did have some folks send me commiserations for not getting the role, and I appreciate all the people who saw me as capable to play her but ultimately, this wasn't my time. Halle won the role fair and square! someday soon I'll get my chance at Ariel... Jodi has yet to post a reaction. Sierra Boggess posted a positive reaction, as did Diana Huey (the Asian actress who played Ariel in the 1st National Tour of TLM the musical). The backlash is unbelievable! Rarely does any of it seem to be valid or rational, a lot of people are just being angry because of racism. Most people I know and are fans of are posting nothing but love and joy, and we as a TLM community should send Halle lots of positivity because she's gonna really need it. #NotMyAriel was trending on twitter today, I am utterly ashamed at so-called "fans" of the original who show their true colors of hatred when Disney dares to cast a talented performer of color as an adaptation of a beloved Disney character. At the end of the day, this is an adaptation. A reimagining. It's not meant to be a carbon copy of the original And how boring would that be? Beauty and the Beast 2017 proved to me that I'm not impressed when the live-action adaptations try to be side-by-side imitations of their original films. And I'm not that excited for The Lion King, for the same reason. The 1989 The Little Mermaid will always exist, and so will this. And it's not like Ariel's race has much to do with the story unlike in other stories where the race of the character matters a lot to the plot and fundamental aspects of the character. Disney could've drawn up Ariel to be any race back in the 80s, they just chose white because it's "default", and times are changing and being white shouldn't need to equate to being the default race when there are SO many people out there who aren't! Here's director Rob Marshall's statement on Halle's casting, I think he says it best: (link from the D23 casting announcement, here: d23.com/halle-bailey-cast-ariel-live-action-reimagining-little-mermaid/?fbclid=IwAR1jZdJtpi2r6fCnJzR37mpOW4mcfBBnKlZZtVgkskwX8UTVJHyrc5V2IOE)

I'm mostly wondering if Haile will be donning an iconic red wig to play the role. After learning about what happened to Ariana Grande due to frequent use of red hair dye, I'm not really a fan of anyone dying their hair anymore.
I assume Scuttle will be a CGI seagull and the person playing the role is just doing the voice to go with the animated model. Although I am wondering if they will have a trained seagull for action shots, ones where closeups aren't necessary, like flying from point A to point B or fetch/carry this object. Anyone know if a real seagull can be trained to do tricks?

From Variety: Disney’s Live-Action ‘Little Mermaid’ Casts Halle Bailey as Ariel
Chloe x Halle member Halle Bailey is ready to become part of Disney’s world.
The R&B singer has been tapped to play Ariel in Disney’s next live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.” Although director Rob Marshall has spent the last couple of months meeting with talent, insiders say Bailey has been a clear front runner from the beginning.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall said in a statement.
Bailey is joining a cast that includes Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina, while Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Ursula.
“The Little Mermaid” will incorporate original songs from the 1989 animated hit as well as new tunes from original composer Alan Menken and “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is also producing the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca.
David Magee wrote the script with Jane Goldman writing a previous draft. Jessica Virtue and Allison Erlikhman are overseeing for the studio.
The original 1989 animated hit followed the mermaid princess Ariel as she sought to fall in love with a human prince on land. Menken wrote the film’s original music, including the songs “Under the Sea,” “Part of Your World” and “Kiss the Girl.”
The role marks Bailey’s feature film debut, following the formation of her music group Chloe x Halle with her sister Chloe in 2015. The pair first rose to fame by posting YouTube covers of Beyoncé before they were eventually discovered by the R&B superstar and her record label. Since their discovery, the duo has signed a record deal with Parkwood Entertainment and has opened for Beyoncé on her “Lemonade” tour.Pics of Halle:

From Screenrant: Little Mermaid: Zendaya Congratulates Halle Bailey on Ariel Casting BY TATIANA HULLENDER – ON JUL 03, 2019 IN MOVIE NEWS the little mermaid and zendaya Following Halle Bailey's casting in the live-action reimagining of The Little Mermaid, superstar Zendaya took to Twitter to celebrate. Helmed by director Rob Marshall, who's handled other musicals like Into The Woods and Mary Poppins Returns, the new film aims to pay homage to the animated Disney classic while updating it for a modern audience. Casting an African-American actress as Ariel is the first exciting step that suggests the latest version will open new doors, but it likely won't be the last.
Before Bailey's casting was confirmed, rumors floated around for months that Zendaya was in the running for Ariel. While she later denied any talks took place with Disney, she did admit that the role was appealing. Given how pervasive the internet whispers of Zendaya starring in The Little Mermaid were, however, many might wonder about her reaction to hearing the official announcement. Thankfully there are only good vibes between the two talented actresses, and the proof is in the social media.
Zendaya tweeted her congratulations to @chloexhalle, the official account for Halle Bailey's R&B duo with sister Chloe. "Yeeeeessss!!," the star of Spider-Man: Far From Home cheered, "Here for thiiiissss!!" And it's no surprise she's excited, as Zendaya herself helped changed the face of pop culture when she was cast as the iconic MJ. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe may not be calling her Mary Jane, she's still fulfilling the role of leading lady in Spider-Man's life. To see her joy over the casting of another young black actress in an important role, one in which she'll be the hero of the story, is nothing short of heartwarming.

She also included an important reminder: "Do not let them steal your joy over this moment." The backlash over Bailey's casting has already begun, and it's an experience that both Zendaya and Patton had to suffer as well.

Halle Bailey has already proven her chops on the Freeform show Grown-ish, which she costars in alongside her sister, and her singing voice speaks for itself in Chloe x Halle songs. She's got the spunk and charisma that it takes to pull off the inquisitive and mischievous Ariel, and the cast around her is shaping up to be equally stellar. It's wonderful to see more established black actresses celebrating a new victory for representation, and soon enough we'll see Bailey herself cheering on the next young woman of color who achieves her dreams.

From Screenrant: Here’s What Halle Bailey Could Look Like As The Little Mermaid BY SANDY SCHAEFER – ON JUL 05, 2019 IN MOVIE NEWS Halle Bailey cast in Little Mermaid remake
People have taken to the internet with fan art imagining what Halle Bailey will look like as Ariel in Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid remake. Disney continues to earn big box office returns on the live-action reimaginings of their classic animated films, and shows no signs of slowing down in the foreseeable future. They've still got two scheduled to arrive this year alone (The Lion King and Lady and the Tramp - the latter through Disney+), followed by Mulan and the 101 Dalmatians prequel Cruella in 2020.
Disney's Little Mermaid remake is also rapidly moving forward, and is currently aiming to start production early next year. Melissa McCarthy, Awkwafina, and Jacob Tremblay are all in talks for roles right now, but the biggest story this week is that singer-actress Bailey (of Chloe x Halle) has been officially cast as Ariel herself. People are clearly excited by the news too, as evidenced by the influx of related fan art online since the announcement.
Famed fan artist BossLogic has since unveiled his rendering of The Little Mermaid poster with Bailey as Ariel striking her famous pose from the 1989 animated movie's "Part of Your World" sequence. 19.4K 8:35 PM - Jul 4, 2019 4,356 people are talking about this Twitter Ads info and privacy The expected racist reactions aside, the general response to Bailey's casting has been universally positive. Most people are clearly enthralled by the idea of a black live-action Disney princess being played by a up and coming musical talent, and this fan art is proof of that. Similarly, Bailey's casting has helped to distinguish The Little Mermaid from the other Disney animated movies turned live-action retellings that are currently in the works. While a number of these remakes come off as unnecessary cash-grabs ahead of their release, this film promises to actually bring something new to the table. That's further reflected in the rest of the casting choices; namely, McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle, and Tremblay as Flounder.
The Little Mermaid also seems to be in safe hands behind the camera so far, with director Rob Marshall calling the shots from a script by his Mary Poppins Returns writer David Magee, and an earlier draft by Jane Goldman (Stardust, Kingsman). Meanwhile, Lin-Manuel Miranda is working with Alan Menken on some new songs for the film, to go with the classic tunes like "Under the Sea" and "Poor Unfortunate Souls". Suffice it to say, it will be fun to see what they come up with for Bailey to perform.
