Personally, I'm hoping they choose Auli'i Cravalho to play Ariel, but I'm uncertain if she wants to take on that role or even if she's still interested in working for Disney outside of playing Moana. The impression I got is that she was just doing something fun as a one-team deal and wasn't going to make a regular thing of it, given that she's still in high school. Or at least, she was during Moana's production, she may have graduated by now.
I'm still uncertain about Zendaya as Ariel, I'm not completely sure she could play the character well. Also, she's a known name and I'd prefer a unknown actress to step up. But how likely is it she's actually chosen yet, they may be throwing her name around a bit, but has anyone confirmed it officially? For all we know, she may turn down the role during negotiations and then they have to start their search for a new Ariel.

From Cheatsheet.com: All of the Evidence That Taylor Swift's Announcement Is About 'The Little Mermaid' Live-Action Remake
The Taylor Swift rumor mill never stops turning, does it? Right now, fans are anticipating *something* coming on April 26, 2019, after the singer revealed a countdown clock 13 days prior. While most fan theories point to a new song (or even a full album) dropping that day, there are other possibilities out there. Here’s why some think she may be making an announcement involving The Little Mermaid live-action remake.
Her New Year’s Eve costume
The first really big clue came when the artist shared a series of photos of herself and many of her celebrity friends dressed up as their childhood heroes at a party to ring in 2019. Blake Lively was Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, Gigi Hadid did an excellent Mary Poppins, and Swift herself can be seen front and center as Ariel from The Little Mermaid. This set fans off buzzing and looking for more hints.
Other mermaid clues Swift is known for sharing Easter eggs small and large in her videos, Instagram posts, and even in her clothing. She wore a jacket featuring a large mermaid patch in images for her album Reputation in 2018. Her Netflix documentary about her Reputation tour also depicted the singer wearing a mermaid shirt. Other, more cryptic clues have been found by fans with a lot of time on their hands, if you want to dive (hehe) further into this theory.
She posted this on Instagram with the date
http://instagram.com/p/BwVCmzPDgKq
Now, things get a bit more speculative. The color palette of Swift’s Instagram has changed a lot over the past couple of months. She closed out 2018 and, ostensibly, the Reputation era, which began with a snake and a very dark color scheme, which completely shifted in 2019.
The pastels and bright, glittery pinks, blues, and yellows have marked a new era, which will presumably be given a name on April 26. But given all of the mermaid theories, it’s hard not to see the connection between the plastic hearts and jewels featured in her countdown posts and a particular upcoming Disney production.
We don’t know who the star of the movie will be There has been just as much speculation around The Little Mermaid live-action remake as there has been whatever Swift is up to. Disney likes to keep things secret as long as possible, but it really seems as though we’re due for an announcement regarding this particular project very soon.
Here’s what we do know: Zendaya has been the frontrunner when it comes to rumors about the star of The Little Mermaid. Lea Michele will be playing the character in the upcoming “Immersive Live-to-Film Concert Experience” at the Hollywood Bowl in May to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the animated classic. And Lindsay Lohan… probably isn’t even in consideration.
…but we know there will be new music
/photo/1
Another interesting tidbit of information? Lin-Manuel Miranda is working with the original film’s composer, Alan Menken on new music for The Little Mermaid adaptation. Given that Disney is more likely to give it up when it comes to songs than casting, what if that’s Swift’s involvement — as the singer/composer of one (or more) of the new tunes? If so, fans might be a little disappointed, but anything Swift is better than nothing.

From Twitter: Live Action Ariel @liveactiontlm We love Keke as Ariel but she has been in the running for quite a while now so we’re not sure what is happening with her as Ariel; but it might happen. However, one of the new actresses we’ve heard about is not her.
Live Action Ariel @liveactiontlm Also, based on what we know Bella is not in the running but she may be!
Live Action Ariel @liveactiontlm Both of these actresses are of different ethnicities and are both not white!
Live Action Ariel @liveactiontlm Hello Guppies, a few days ago we tweeted about how we had heard rumours of new actresses that are in the running for the role of Ariel. We have had so many questions and so we will clarify some things below. Please be sure to read but we are still unable to give the names away!
Live Action Ariel @liveactiontlm To begin, both of these actresses are singers. Both actresses have amazing and strong voices perfectly suited to be in a musical. This is obviously super important for the role of Ariel since some of Ariel’s story revolves around her voice.
Live Action Ariel @liveactiontlm We have had a few questions about the actresses and their previous work. One of these actresses is fresh off Broadway playing a role similar to Ariel. The other is a movie and television actress with an amazing voice; she has also previously worked with The Walt Disney Company.
Live Action Ariel @liveactiontlm The final thing we have received a lot of questions about is the ethnicity or race of these actresses. Both actresses are of different races, one of them being from mixed heritage. To clarify this further both are not white, which we think is very exciting to hear.
Live Action Ariel @liveactiontlm I think that has answered most of the questions about these new actresses. Please be sure the comment any further questions down below but please be aware that we will not be sharing the names of either actress!

From UnionJournalism: Zendaya might star in Disney’s live action movie The Little Mermaid
Disney is all set to remake a live action movie of The Little Mermaid. There have been strong rumors that American actress, Zendaya might be playing the titular role. She had also been cast in Spiderman: Homecoming. Fans believe that it might be possible that the actress would be cast as Ariel.
There has been no official confirmation from Disney regarding this rumor. However, there might be someone else interested in portraying Ariel in the live action feature. Jane Levy is also reportedly vying for the role. She would have her competition in Zendaya for the role of Ariel.
However, the actress, herself shared her thoughts about Disney’s new feature in an interview last year. The actress had earlier shoved aside the suggestion as “just a rumor”.
She also expressed her interest to be cast in the movie if Disney decides to move forward with it. “I loved The Little Mermaid,” Zendaya told People.
“It is honestly one of my favorite movies of all time. I was obsessed with it when I was a little kid.” She expressed her love for the classic movie. Zendaya’s recent comments can be interpreted as a nod to the rumors. It might be that she could be cast in The Little Mermaid as Ariel.
Apart from Zendaya, Harry Styles is also rumored to be interested in Disney’s new project. As per reports, the singer is interested to play the role of Prince Eric.
Prince Eric is the lover of Ariel. Fans are already excited about the new movie and are rooting for Styles to be cast opposite Zendaya.
Harry Styles had earlier showed his acting prowess in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. So, it might be that Disney might consider him for the role of Prince Eric.
Styles is not the only one who has his eyes set on the role. Reports suggest that he would have to compete with Noah Centino for the role.
Disney has remained tight lipped about the rumours surrounding The Little Mermaid.

From TeenVogue: Fans Once Again Call for Lizzo to Portray Ursula in "The Little Mermaid" It's what we deserve!
BY TESS GARCIA JUNE 15, 2019 Fans Once Again Call for Lizzo to Portray Ursula in The Little Mermaid COMPOSITE: EVERETT COLLECTION, CAMPBELL ADDY The campaign for Lizzo to play Ursula in The Little Mermaid has officially returned.
The Lizzo-as-Ursula movement began last October when, after reports of a live action Little Mermaid remake, the songstress tweeted out an “audition tape” with the caption “Just gonna put this back out there. IT IS MY DREAM TO PLAY URSULA IN THE LIL MERMAID.” Two weeks later, she dressed up as Ursula for Halloween. Now, after a series of seriously nautical photos, fans have once again begun advocating for Lizzo’s rightful role as Disney’s most glamorous villain.
On Thursday, June 13, our body-positive, flute-playing queen performed at the 50th annual Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony in honor of Missy Elliott’s induction. The following day, she shared photos from the special night on Instagram, and her outfit, featuring a teal and black gown and close-cropped red hair, is serving some major Under the Sea vibes.
Naturally, fans responded to the photos by demanding via Twitter that Disney offer their fave the role of Ursula. One person even proposed a cast list for the movie’s main roles, including Zendaya as Ariel (there have been rumors!), Lizzo as Ursula and Chris Evans as Prince Eric.

From TheMarySue: What If We Gender Bent the Live-Action Version of the Little Mermaid? by Rachel Leishman | 2:37 pm, June 17th, 2019
Talk has surfaced on Twitter of who should be cast as Prince Eric in a live-action version of The Little Mermaid, which we’ve heard about more than once but have yet to get details or official casting on. While most suggestions were the internet boyfriends of the teens these days, I have a different idea. What if, instead, we gender bent The Little Mermaid?
— rachel leishman (@rachelleishman) June 17, 2019
The problem that many people have with The Little Mermaid is that half the movie features a silenced Ariel who is supposed to use her body to get a man to fall in love with her. While she is an amazing character as a mermaid, that charm is also paired with the fact that she’s in a bikini top and ends up on the beach naked.
On top of that, many of these live-action Disney movies do not live up to their animated counterparts in the first place. They’re there for the nostalgia-fueled money and that’s about it. So, if we changed it up and made it something worthwhile, maybe we would all be a bit more excited about it.
To be quite honest, I think there’s something beautiful in examining The Little Mermaid through the opposite lens. Prince Eric was never a bad guy; he was just in love with the woman who met him and knew her from her voice. That doesn’t mean there weren’t questionable tones throughout the film worth addressing, though.
So, if Ariel were a man, and his mother told him he wasn’t allowed to go to the surface for a woman, everything changes. I think that it would honestly make the Prince Eric character even more interesting because … a princess who loves the sea and wants to explore it at any cost? Way cooler than a man wanting to do so. We’ve been there, done that.
I don’t think that Disney would be too keen on the idea, but I think that if we’re going to continue to make live-action versions of these movies, they need to start to say something rather than just retelling the same story we have watched since we were kids. They’re even getting a warmup with their gender-bent Splash remake! No excuses, Disney.

From TheGlowUp: ENTERTAINMENT Yes, Zendaya Dyed Her Hair Red. No, That Doesn't Mean She's Playing The Little Mermaid (or Does It?)

She claims it’s an homage to the Spider-Man franchise, but is Zendaya’s new hair color actually a tease that she’ll play another iconic character? That’s what fans were wondering after seeing the ingenue with a decidedly red mane during a London photocall for Spider-Man: Far From Home.
http://instagr.am/p/By07gU6A20B
Could an announcement of Zendaya playing Ariel in a live-action remake of The Little Mermaid be far behind?
We can only hope, but for now, no, Zendaya is not part of that world—at least, not yet. The new look was simply due to a semi-permanent dye, which the new star of HBO’s Euphoria wrote was an homage to the “MJ” legacy in the film franchise, first embodied by Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, and now by Zendaya as friend-turned-romantic interest Michelle (who notably, is portrayed as a brunette, like the actress).
But as Elle points out, there has been significant buzz about a Little Mermaid reboot on the horizon, and even more speculation about Zendaya as a possible lead. In fact, as recently as Saturday, there were casting rumors floating around on social media.
But if there’s any truth to the rumors, Zendaya is refusing to fuel them, leaving us poor, unfortunate souls all simply wishing and hoping our Disney dreams can come true (put Lizzo in as Ursula, and we’re there). So, for now, a dye job—however apropos—is just a dye job, no matter how much we’d like to see Zendaya’s talents in action “Under the Sea.”

From EliteDaily: The Photos Of Zendaya's New Red Hair Have Fans Demanding She Play Ariel In 'Little Mermaid'
World, I don't even want to tell you about the sound that came out of my mouth when I opened up Instagram this morning and saw that Zendaya — my girl, Zendaya — had dyed her hair red. I mean, Zendaya has proved time and time again that she can rock any and all looks, so it went without saying that red hair on the multi-talented superstar would look stunning. But actually seeing it right there in front of you? Well, that's a whole different thing. And let me tell you, these photos of Zendaya's new red hair not only knocked me down dead and brought me back to life on sight, but they also have fans on Twitter making one very particular demand to Disney when it comes to one of their highly anticipated future movie adaptations.
OK, so here's what went down: The whole cast of Spider-Man: Far From Home assembled in London on Monday, June 17, for a photocall promoting the movie, which is set to premiere on July 2. Zendaya's castmates Tom Holland, Jacob Batalon, and Jake Gyllenhaal showed up looking, well... like they usually do (albeit, dressed to the nines). But Zendaya shook things (read: my entire world) up by showing up with brand new fire-engine red hair.
Y'all aren't ready, but here we go...
As these things go, Twitter is now theorizing about why Zendaya died her hair red. Sure, her Spider-Man character, MJ, has historically been a redhead in the comics, but shooting for the movie ended so long ago and production on a third installment has yet to be announced. So, since "she just wanted to dye her hair red" simply is not a good enough answer for Twitter, they have another theory.
See, Twitter has been begging Disney to cast Zendaya as Ariel in the planned live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid for ages, so can you blame fans for automatically jumping to the conclusion that this was Zendaya signaling that she would, indeed, play the most iconic mermaid there is?
Sadly, Zendaya shut down the speculation before it could really take off, taking to Twitter to confirm that the simplest explanation for her red hair was, in fact, the real one: It's just an homage to her Spider-Man character, MJ. (An only-semi-permanent homage, at that.)
