From Bustle: 'The Little Mermaid Live!' Cast Photos Vs. The Original Film Are Spot-On By KELLY SCHREMPH Oct 7, 2019 The Little Mermaid Live cast compared to the original film is uncanny Disney
A certain talking crab has always said that life was better under the sea, and based on The Little Mermaid Live! cast photos vs. the original film, that sentiment has never seemed more accurate. ABC released the first promo for the live-action project, and while the 30-second clip doesn't give too much away in regards to the overall performances, it does give fans an idea about what The Little Mermaid Live! cast will look like compared to the original, animated counterparts. This includes the likes of Ariel (played by Auli’i Cravalho), Ursula the Sea Witch (played by Queen Latifah), Sebastian (played by Shaggy), Prince Eric (played by Graham Phillips), and Chef Louis (played by John Stamos).
Granted, there are a few noticeable differences between the two sets of characters. (For starters, the Live! cast is made up of actual, real-life people.) But aside from that small, tiny detail the similarities are uncanny. According to the official logline as per TVLine, The Little Mermaid Live! is described as being a “never-before-seen hybrid format" that's unlike any other live-action production that's been done in the past. That's because the live musical performances will actually be interwoven into the broadcast of the original feature film, making the lookalike appearances more important than ever.
So how does this new cast stack up to the iconic animations? Let's just say you'll be eager to become part of this world...
Ariel
"I am so honored to be not only Moana, but now get to lend my voice to Ariel," Cravalho said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly while discussing her excitement at playing yet another Disney character. "I don't think there are any more water princesses. I think I've hit them all." But this time she'll be trading in her oar for a set of fins.
Ursula
The white hair; the purple accents, the seashell necklace — Queen Latifah matches the formidable Sea Witch in every way. It's enough to send chills up your spine.
Sebastian
Between that red leather jacket and his background as a recording artist, it's easy to see Shaggy conducting an orchestra of underwater creature during the show's rendition of "Under the Sea."
Chef Louis
Stamos may be best known for playing Uncle Jesse on Full House, but the actor already has some experience when it comes to playing the angry, crab-obsessed chef from The Little Mermaid. Stamos first took on the role at the Hollywood Bowl’s production of the film back in 2016, so it'll be interesting to see what new aspects of this character he's cooked up since then.
Prince Eric
The role of the attractive and charming Prince Eric was ultimately given to Phillips, who has appeared in a number of other projects, including The Good Wife and Riverdale. He also dated Ariana Grande at one point, so he and Eric already have one thing in common: they've been known to fall for women with beautiful voices.
The Little Mermaid Live! airs Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

From Deadline: ‘The Little Mermaid Live!’: Amber Riley To Emcee ABC Musical By Erik Pedersen
October 10, 2019 9:00am
ABC Glee alum Amber Riley has been cast as the emcee in The Little Mermaid Live!, the hybrid musical event that airs on ABC next month.
She joins the previously announced cast including Auli’i Cravalho as Ariel, Queen Latifah (Ursula) and Shaggy (Sebastian), Graham Phillips (Prince Eric) and John Stamos (Chef Louis).
Billed as a tribute to the original animated classic and its music, The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live! will feature live musical performances interwoven into the broadcast of the original feature film. The hybrid format will combine sets and costumes created for the special with music from the original animated film and the Tony-winning Broadway stage version, composed by eight-time Oscar-winner Alan Menken. Howard Ashman’s film lyrics will also be showcased, with Glenn Slater, lyricist for the Broadway adaptation, as a contributor.
Riley played Mercedes Jones for the entire run of Fox’s musical drama Glee and most recently appeared in the Tyler Perry feature Nobody’s Fool, opposite Tiffany Haddish and Tika Sumpter. She won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Effie White in the 2016 West End revival of Dreamgirls. Riley also won Season 17 of Dancing with the Stars in 2013. She next appears in the UPtv original movie My One Christmas Wish.
The show is produced by Done+Dusted. Executive producers include Done+Dusted’s Hamish Hamilton — who also will direct — Katy Mullan, David Jammy, Raj Kapoor and Ian Stewart. Also executive producing is Richard Kraft, producer and director of the Hollywood Bowl productions of The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.
The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live! airs from 8-10 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, on ABC. The show airs live in the East and delayed at 8 p.m. in the West.

From EW: See Auli'i Cravalho flip her fins in new Little Mermaid Live promo By Maureen Lee Lenker October 14, 2019 at 08:17 PM EDT
Flipping your fins, you don’t get too far…unless of course you’re playing Ariel in ABC’s The Little Mermaid Live! A new promo showcases Disney star Auli’i Cravalho in character as Ariel while rehearsing for the live extravaganza that is going to feature footage from the animated film, blended with live musical numbers. Cravalho twirls through the air wearing a tail in a clip showcasing just a hint of some of the Disney magic in store. “You’ll see the characters pop out and come to life,” explains John Stamos, who will be portraying the crab-loving Chef Louis. “It’s like putting a cherry on top of what you love already.” As Cravalho says, “The Little Mermaid Live! is truly a unique experience.” The new promo, which dropped Monday night, features Cravalho becoming part of our world and showcases plenty of footage of the all-star cast in the recording studio, rehearsing complicated choreography, and blocking on the soundstage. While a previous promo introduced us to many of the cast in character for the first time, this is the first footage that’s given us a hint of what we can expect from the live broadcast. It’s a new twist on the live musical and more akin to Disney’s live orchestral productions at the Hollywood Bowl where the original animated film plays, but live-action breakouts allow the musical numbers to come to life in front of the audience’s eyes. Watch the clip above for more and prepare to go under the sea when The Little Mermaid Live! airs Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 8 p.m.

From TvGuide: New The Little Mermaid Live! Promo Confirms Prince Eric Will Sing
Another behind-the-scenes look at The Little Mermaid Live! is here and it confirms what many fans have been wondering since the casting of Graham Phillips was announced — Prince Eric will sing in the hybrid take on the Disney classic. Little Mermaid Live is different than the other live musical events that have come before it because ABC will play the original Little Mermaid animated film from 1989, but when it comes time for a musical number will cut to the live cast performing the number on a soundstage. Of course, Disney aficionados will recall that Prince Eric doesn't have any songs within the animated feature, but the new featurette shows Phillips singing and doing group choreography, so he's at least in a group number if not getting a song of his own. If it's the latter option, the question remains whether it's an original musical number written for this performance or if the producers are stealing one of Eric's songs from the Broadway musical. By the looks of the featurette, it's early on the film when Ariel first sees Eric on his ship with the crew. As the cast says, this type of performance hasn't been done on television before. It looks like Disney is going all out to give everyone a memorable experience for ABC's first musical event. Get your fins on because we go under the sea on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 8/7c on ABC.

From CinemaBlend: New Little Mermaid Live Video Shows Off The High-Flying Musical's Dances
WRITTEN BY MAE ABDULBAKI
While Disney has cornered the market on live-action feature remakes, The Little Mermaid is also getting a stage adaptation that'll go under the sea in November for a live musical adventure on ABC. News about the live television musical came not long after Halle Bailey was cast to play Ariel in the live-action adaptation of the beloved Disney animation. With The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live! set to debut soon, ABC has finally offered some visual magic by releasing a new behind-the-scenes video showcasing the spectacular musical dances.
“It’s never been done before!” So says Shaggy, who will be portraying Sebastian in The Little Mermaid Live!, and it’s true. The staged version of the animated classic will be different from previous live television musicals, as the movie will be playing in the background throughout the special, and it will be split into a dozen choreographed musical numbers. This hybrid is definitely unique and should make for an interesting live show.
You can watch the behind the scenes video from the television musical below!
Fuller House's John Stamos, who is playing Chef Louis, claims that fans will see all of the beloved characters popping out of the action and coming to life. The television musical will include twelve songs showcasing detailed costumes, daring dance numbers, and impressive high-flying feats. At one point, Auli’i Cravalho’s Ariel is on a wire and spinning while looking upwards, which is mostly likely taken from the scene where Ariel sings “Part of Your World” in her own version of the Cave of Wonders.
Moana star Auli’i Cravalho will also be joined by Queen Latifah as the villainous Ursula. I’m going to be honest, Queen Latifah is one of the best Disney castings of all time for Ursula, and she’s no stranger to musicals, either. While the live-action adaptation hasn’t yet found its Prince Eric, The Little Mermaid Live! version of the character will be played by Graham Phillips of The Good Wife.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time John Stamos is set to play Chef Louis, as he'll be reprising the role he played in a performance of The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl.
The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live! marks the first time that Disney is venturing into the live television musical arena. NBC was the first network to air and popularize live musicals and released The Sound of Music and The Wiz, among others.
Fox followed suit not long after, with their most popular live musical event being Grease. Earlier this year, however, the live musical version of Rent proved to be a disaster after one of the actors broke his foot hours before the show went live. Fox decided to air the pre-recorded dress rehearsal instead of using an understudy and later received backlash over their decision. But, as they say, the show must go on and it did.
The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live! Airs Tuesday, November 5 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. To see what else is coming to television in November, be sure to check out our complete guide for every new and returning show.

That's so cool!
According to Auli'i, there's going to be 12 songs. The animated classic has 8, so there's 4 songs left from the Broadway Musical... which ones do you think that are going to make the cut?
I think that "Her Voice" and "If Only" are going to be there for sure.... and maybe "Beyond My Wildest Dreams" or "The World Above"?

From Vulture: DUELING MOVIES OCT. 17, 2019 Nickelodeon and Disney to Release Dueling Underwater-Themed Live Musical Events By Bethy Squires
Both Disney and Nickelodeon will be vying for our aquatic affections this winter, releasing their live Little Mermaid and The SpongeBob Musical: Live On Stage! within weeks of each other. It’s Antz vs. A Bug’s Life all over again. Disney announced the live version of The Little Mermaid back in August, but we’re only now getting images of Shaggy as Sebastian and John Stamos looking like the most theatrical pervert as Chef Louis. As a pas de deux between Mr. Boombastic and the one-and-only owner of the Big D, the ABC production stands to be the most sexually charged rendition of “Les Poissons” ever committed to tape.
Meanwhile, Nickelodeon has their own undersea adventure in the works. It was announced today that Tony-nominated SpongeBob SquarePants musical will debut on the channel in December. The original cast and director are reuniting, according to Deadline. “What better way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants than to bring this wildly imaginative Broadway musical to Nickelodeon for a wider audience,” said Executive Vice President of Nickelodeon Live Action Unscripted Rob Bagshaw in a statement. “We could not be more excited that fans and families of all ages will now have the opportunity to experience live actors portraying these beloved characters in a whole new way with The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage!”

From Playbill: Watch How Aerialists Will Bring The Little Mermaid Live! to Life Under the Sea BY DAN MEYER OCT 24, 2019 The new behind-the-scenes video highlights the use of high-wire movement to mimic swimming in an underwater world. A new behind-the-scenes video from The Little Mermaid Live! reveals how the television spectacle plans to bring the animated characters to life during the live performance segments. Using Loriel Hennington’s aerialist (Ariel-ist?) choreography, performers will dance and twirl through the air in the studio—but on TV, they’ll be swimming like mermaids under the sea.
“I’m so excited and so nervous—I’m going to be flying!” says Auli’i Cravalho, who will play Ariel. Queen Latifah, set to play Ursula, says she’s never been part of anything like this before—even though she is a veteran of live musical broadcasts after NBC's The Wiz.
The Little Mermaid Live! will also star Shaggy as Sebastian, John Stamos as Chef Louis, and Graham Phillips as Prince Eric.
Richard Kraft serves as executive producer for the TV event, having devised a similar presentation at the Hollywood Bowl in 2016. Meanwhile, a live-action film adaptation of The Little Mermaid is also in the works, with Lin-Manuel Miranda collaborating with Oscar winner Alan Menken on new songs (Menken won two Oscars for his work on the 1989 movie, including one with the late Howard Ashman for “Under the Sea”).
The Little Mermaid Live! airs November 5 on ABC at 8 PM; check local listings.

From TeenVogue: TV "Little Mermaid Live" Drops First Photos of Auli'i Cravalho as Ariel We want to be part of her world.
BY KARA NESVIG OCTOBER 24, 2019 AULI'I CRAVALHO ANDREW ECCLES New promo pics for ABC's The Little Mermaid Live! are here, and star Auli'i Cravalho's transformation into the iconic red-haired mermaid Ariel is absolutely perfect. We'd like to be — shall we say — part of this world, immediately.
JustJared Jr. shared a handful of new promo pics for the live special, airing on November 5. While we've already seen Auli'i with Ariel's signature long red waves in a sneak peek when her casting was officially announced earlier this month, we've been waiting for more pics from the special, and these glimpses into rehearsals and recording sessions are adorable.
Auli'i rose to fame on Rise and provided the singing voice for Moana, so we know she's going to do a killer job as Ariel, whose voice is her ticket (and, at times, a major problem) to a whole new world alongside the prince she falls in love with. According to JustJared Jr., The Little Mermaid Live! is actually a "hybrid" version of the Disney classic and the Broadway musical, part animated and part live, so it won't be 100% faithful to the animated movie you grew up watching over and over. And as we previously reported, we still don't know who's playing Ariel's dad, King Triton, or her best friend, the fish Flounder. Hmmmm ...
We've gotten a few glimpses of The Little Mermaid Live! to ramp up excitement for the ABC special. Earlier in October, a special "behind the scenes" teaser showed us how Auli'i will "swim" as Ariel and revealed a few exciting details about the production, including puppets!
The ABC special isn't the only Little Mermaid remake happening; Disney is planning its own live-action version of the 1989 film starring Halle Bailey as Ariel. The Disney version is expected to begin filming next year, though details about it have been sparse.
We're so close to the new Little Mermaid Live!, so we think it's time to pull out that Little Mermaid DVD we've been saving and hit the "play" button to prepare. Anyone up for a singalong?
