Meanwhile Ariel had swam back to the sea bed... She sat down on a rock, and was just about to cry when something caught her eye; the silver locket that had fallen from the ship.

Feeling stressed and irritated, she buried it under the sand and dropped a heavy rock on it.

"Its a 'Clappadoodle' " exclaimed Scuttle. "Humans use these to hide their feelings in!" "But how?" asked Ariel. "Well......uhh....." Scuttle did not know how to answer her question. Peeking inside, he saw the picture of a young girl, with an inscription which read, No one in life is worth your tears. The only one who is will never make them fall.

Meanwhile, a girl stood crying at the bow of a ship somewhere. A lady tried to approach her, saying: there there my dear... what has happened?
The girl said, gulping, I-I l-lost the l-locket. M-My grandmothers l-locket.

Scuttle continued. "What they do is whisper into it what they are feeling, then they close it up tight. Then, they throw it away, as it takes the bad feelings with them." Scuttle nodded.

So what should I do with it then Ariel asked. I don't know, said Scuttle, and then added: But it cannot be good to carry so much pain around.

The bedraggled seagull wished Ariel a happy birthday – she was delighted somebody had remembered – and flew away, leaving the little mermaid alone with the locket and facing a difficult decision.(I hope we're about to find out what's been bothering Ariel - I really want to know!)

Ariel wanted to rid these feelings from her heart, so she knew what dhe had to do. Opening the locket, she began, "I-I mean--Well, it seems my entire family has forgotten my birthday today. But not only that, they've all been acting so strange around me. I guess what I'm trying to say is---" Ariel's words were interupted as the same ship swam closer to her. It was pulling into dock. On the ship, Ariel saw a sad little girl in tears. "She looks so familliar..." Ariel said. Peeking again in the locket, she suddenly knew who the little girl was.

But with so many people about, it was going to be nearly impossible to return it to her. Ariel looked at the locket again. Inside was a tiny portrait oftwo women. Ariel couldn't idenitfy the first one, but the second was the unhappy girl, peering over the railing into the vast reaches of the ocean.
Ariel made her wish. "I wish for her pain to go away." Clasping it shut, Ariel pondered her next move.

Meanwhile, Sebastian and Flounder had started to search the sea for Ariel.

"Dat girl's gonna drive me crazy. All I ever seem to do is look for her!" Sebastian groused as he scanned the ocean.
"You don't think she went to the surface again, do you?" asked Flounder.
"Definately. I just don't know where!"

She looked so sad when I last saw her, said Flounder. Do you think we were to good at making her belive that we had forgotten her birthday?

"She had no idea dat we were just pretending!" Sebastian said excitedly. "I just hope we weren't too convincing." Flounder said worried. Meanwhile, Ariel swam to the dock where the ship had set. She noticed the little girl walking to the mermaid!" Exclaimed the little girl. Ariel knew she was the only mermaid around, so she quickly sank beneath the waves before anyone else could see her. "Oh stop your lies, Amanda." Said the elder woman. "You'll go to bed without supper if you lie again." "But I'm not lying nanna! I really saw her! I really-"
"Thats enough. I warned you to stop lying, but now you'll be going to bed without supper."
Amanda sat at the dock in tears, and the elder woman left. "What a cruel woman." Ariel said to herself. Ariel swam over to Amanda to comfort her. Amanda noticed her locket, and a smile took place of her frown. Just as Ariel was about to give her the locket, the elder woman came calling, "Amanda! It is time for your music lesson! Come here at once!" Amanda knew she had to leave. "Don't worry," Ariel said. "I'll make sure you get your locket back."
"Happy birthday." Amanda said. Ariel smiled that someone said those words to her. But how did Amanda know it was her birthday? She never told her. Did they meet before? Or did Amanda have a secret....
**note* The name "Amanda" means "worthy of love."**

It was just before sunset when Amanda returned. Everyone else had gone to bed. Amanda leaned over and called in a whisper: "Ariel! Ariel"

As the night brought the end of Ariel's birthday ever closer, the deep ocean water took on a gentle orange glow. King Triton and the merpeople of Atlantica had gathered at the palace to wait for Sebastian and Flounder to arrive with Ariel so the party could begin. But hours had passed and a tense silence had fallen over the sea floor.
Flounder and Sebastian had cought up with Ariel on the surface, but there was no convincing her to dive back below the waves. Sebastian had even told her about the party and although Ariel was sorry, she couldn't tear herself away from the little girl whose voice was carried on the wind, calling out her name.
Sebastian instinctively grabbed Ariel's fin and they raced off into the open water towards the ship, with Flounder right behind them.

Ariel swam as fast as she could toward the ship . She had to see what the little girl wanted. She felt as if she was drawn to her for a purpose .
"Ariel, this is crazy!", Sebastain said . "You're father is getting worried. Please come join the party!"

Ariel was excited at the thought of going to a birthday party for her but she had to talk to the girl.
She swam over to the side of the ship and said " Hello? Were you calling me?"
