While Flounder and Sebastian hid underwater, Ariel looked up to face Amanda, but the blazing sunset dazzled her and she quickly shielded her eyes. Even a little mermaid who spent a lot of their time on the surface was not used to that kind of light. Ariel squinted upwards once more. Her vision was blurred and against the vibrant sky she could only make out a dark shape, who reached out her hand expectantly. Ariel looked down at the locket. She had been whispering her troubles into it all evening while she waited and she couldn’t help but feel uneasy about giving it away. Still, she knew it wasn’t her property so she held it out and watched the dark figure take it. There was a moment of silence - Ariel was waiting for her friend to speak, but she didn't. She didn't even move. Bewildered, Ariel sank back into the water, unaware that she had just handed over the locket to the cruel old woman. She had poured her heart into the locket, which was now in the clutches of evil.

The evil woman was Amanda's Aunt. She neglected the child and took great pride in that. In reality, she was an evil witch .

And now this evil witch held in her hand the contents of Ariel's heart - every dream, every memory, every secret!
Ariel felt strangely empty as she drifted back home to Atlantica. The merpeople had left the palace and returned to their coral houses, but King Triton remained at the entrance, waiting anxiously for a glimpse of beautiful red hair in the distance.
But Ariel didn't make it back to Atlantica on the night of her 16th birthday. As Flounder and Sebastian swam on ahead of her, they became blurred and the water around her seemed to darken. A heavy drowsiness washed over her and she sunk to the ground unconscious.

Ariel felt numb as she lay on the seafloor , uable to move . She felt as if she had lost everything ever important to her so she let herself surcum to the drowsiness .
Only a few feet ahead of her, Flounder started to worry.

Down on the sea floor, Ariel began to stir. Flounder swam closer to her and whispered...
"Ariel, wake up. Are you okay?"
He heard a gentle scraping noise and turned to see Ariel's hand beginning to shake, her fingers scraping in the sand. Suddenly it flew powerfully upwards, hitting him hard in the face and sending him rushing through the water. He struck a rock and plunged to the ground.
Ariel looked up, her eyes colourless and cold. She began to laugh, harshly and cruelly. The sound pierced through the water and echoed to the steps of King Triton's palace, where the King himself felt an icy chill run right down his spine and through his tail.

"Flounder, there you are!"
Sebastian was relieved to find his friend after a long search in the dark. Flounder was lying in the sand, murmuring drowsily.
"Wake up Flounder! Where is Ariel?"
Flounder began to come around. He looked blearily up at Sebastian.
"Flounder, what's going on?" Sebastian asked shakily.
Flounder looked up at the surface that sparkled with the rising sun and struggled to remember the events of the night before. Suddenly a memory hit him light a lightening bolt, momentarily stunning him... Ariel's hand twitching on the ground, rising up and striking him. The sea dissolving into darkness and a harsh, cold laugh.
Flounder snapped back into reality.
"It's Ariel. Something's happened to Ariel! Come on!"
Sebastian clung on to Flounder's fin and they rushed off in search of their best friend.

As Flounder recounted the haunting tale, the heartless and empty shell of Ariel swum to the palace. The water chilled around her as she let out a bitter laugh. Soon she would have the trident.

Back at the palace, Ariel floated steathily over the throne room, looking through one of the high windows that surrounded the vast chamber. King Triton sat, slumped in his throne, his face buried in his hands. Dudley the Sea Turtle approached the miserable monarch.
"You should really..." he murmured slowly. As always, King Triton finished his sentence for him.
"Get some sleep? You're right Dudley," he sighed heavily. He dragged himself off the throne and left the throne room. He was so worried about Ariel that he left the trident in the golden stand next to the throne. Ariel laughed once more. Only a descendant of the King could break the enchantment and remove the trident from its stand.
Ariel drifted towards the powerful object and reached out for it. But before she could grasp it in her hand, a thick layer of ice formed on its surface. Ariel's blank eyes burned with fury and the ice melted away. She took hold of the trident.

Ariel clutched the trident tightly in her cold hands. Flounder and Sebastian cautiously swam up to Ariel.
"Ariel! Ariel! What are you doing with the trident?" Sebastian questioned frantically.
Ariel gave no response. Her hallow ice blue eyes just glared back at Flounder and Sebastian as if she were in a deep trance. She quicky put her back to Flounder and Sebastian and rose to the surface almost magnetically.

"ARIEL!" called Sebastian.
Flounder shivered.
"Didn't you see her eyes?" he said. "I knew something was wrong. And I know something terrible is going to happen if we don't get the trident back."
"But how..?" Sebastian began, but Flounder had already taken off after Ariel. Guppies can be surprisingly brave sometimes.
Meanwhile, Amanda was locked inside her cabin on board the ship, but for the last couple of hours she had been working on prising the porthole open with anything she could lay her hands on. She was having great success with the fork she was currently using and after a while she dropped it and took hold of the frame. She pushed and pulled in a precise series of angles that suggested she had done something of the sort before, and suddenly fractured glass spilled across the floor and the wind swept into the cabin.
Amanda didn't wait a moment. Clinging to the sides, she swung herself through the opening and grabbed onto the railings of the deck. The harsh wind pulled at her hair and clothes, but her grip didn't loosen. Squinting against the weather, she saw her Aunt standing at the other end of the ship, surrounded by a terrible fiery glow, and with that she let go of the railings and plummeted into the sea.

The cold water rushed around her, the icy cold cutting through her skin. Unable to swim she began sinking, even with all her might she could not keep her head above the violent waves. It was at this point she was completely submerged, helpless and drowning.

As Ariel rose to the surface, her cold eyes caught a glimpse of Amanda drowning a few feet in front of her.
The evil witches powers had completely consumed Ariel's soul. She no longer had the ability to feel emotions or understand the value of life. The witch's evil plan was working out perfectly. She knew Ariel would not be able to cope knowing she had killed a human and her life would be ruined. It was at that moment Ariel against her own will pointed the trident at Amanda.

Triton powerfully swam through the water, it was then that he caught a glimpse of his daughter, as she ascended to the forbidden world of humans. In her hand she held the precious Trident, his froze in shock. Though his attention was soon distracted for a moment, as floating down into the water helpless, was a little girl. A human girl.

He watched the child descending ever deeper into the dark fathoms of the deadly sea. His heart sank a little as he saw her fragile limbs moving weakly, and had his own body not ended in a shimmering tail, a tear may have blurred the sight of her landing gently on the sand.
Then something very strange happened - something even the King of the sea with a magical trident could not have anticipated. Amanda slid smoothly and gracefully free from her elaborate gown of heavy cloth and rose into the light, no longer a human girl. It turned out she did have a secret and the sea was no enemy to her after all.
