I definitely prefer the classic Disney, and I'm sure most people do, since it's what has made Disney... Disney! All of my favorite Disney movies are ones made in the 80s/90s (Little Mermaid for example.) I do enjoy a lot of the newer stuff they've come out with though. Mostly the Pixar movies, like Cars and the Incredibles. I have to admit Disney's been going through a bit of a rough patch lately coming up with that magic they used to have.
I've never been a fan of sequels, so I'm not too crazy about movies like TLMII, Hunchback II, the new Cinderellas, Lady and the Tramp II... etc. But some sequels are good too, just like how some of the "new age" movies are. I enjoyed the Aladdin sequels, Toy Story II and the Rescuers Down Under. I mean, I hate being so negative about the Disney movies that come out, because I always remember the wonderful stuff they've made in the past.
Disney is still Disney, no matter what. Even though I didn't necessarily enjoy Brother Bear for example, while watching it, it still had that Disney feel to it, which is nice. Things have changed, you know? Not the same people are working with Disney that worked there when Walt was alive for example, so it's good to look at the movies from a different perspective and sort of welcome them in their own individual forms. Instead of comparing them to the classics.
But I definitely know where you're coming from, I feel the same way a lot of the time. Definitely miss the old Disney classics that we all know and love. :]

It definitely oozes Tim Burton's style. I imagine many of the characters will be dressed in funky outfits like this, and I wonder if the whole film will be this color scheme. Like when he did Sweeney Todd, the whole film was kind of color-drained to give off a sort of black and white film feel. Guess we'll have to wait and see till either more pictures are released or a trailer. I am extremely excited for this movie though. Johnny + Burton = AWESOME!

WOAH! Where in the world did you find that picture??
I think it's fairly obvious the approach Burton is going to take with Alice in Wonderland. While I do love it as the sort of fluffy and cute Disney version, I think Tim Burton will do an awesome job giving it that dark twist he does so well. And you can never go wrong with Johnny, the man is just an absolute genius when it comes to acting!

I am going to refrain from focusing on the negatives on this movie, as I usually tend to do when discussing Disney sequels.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is probably my favorite Disney movie. Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast are up there in my top favs. But, since I have a disabled brother, the movie touched me in a way a lot of people don't understand. That's not the only reason I love the movie so dearly though. The songs were great, the characters were awesome and the movie flowed extremely well. It was just a great Disney classic that never gets old.
Anyway, enough about the original. I agree with you about how heart warming the second is. I thought the whole thing about Quasi finding love was great. So, the plot was good, and it could have been a fantastic sequel I think. But the animation looked cheap and sloppy, and the songs didn't have that same quality the originals did. Very forgettable.
Anytime a sequel is approached, I think a lot of effort and care should be put into it. Since so many people fall in love with the original classics, it's delicate territory to enter, I think. It's so rare to be able to capture that same magic the originals have.

Hm, I don't like thinking about it... haha! I like thinking that they lived happily ever after... THE END. I don't know, I just prefer to remember Ariel and Eric being in love, that special young love. Not being settled down with a kid. You know? Probably not, I'm just weird like that.
But as some people have said, I would like to have thought Ariel could return to the sea whenever she pleased. Not being forced to stay on land. And maybe be able to bring Eric along with her or something. I would just have liked to have Ariel keep that spark of youth that she had in the original.

I hate being Miss Negativity, but I was really disappointed in this movie. Someone said it in either this thread or in another, that the movie felt just like another episode from the series. I felt the exact same way. There was nothing over the top about it at all. The songs weren't memorable, the characters seemed so different, and the story was boring.
Music is banned from the Kingdom? That's the whole story? Sure, they threw in some stuff about Ariel's childhood, but I thought the movie should have focused more on how Ariel falls in love with the human world. They show Athena being killed by a ship or something, and Triton is obviously horrified which sparks his hatred for humans. So, how does Ariel become so infatuated with them?
This movie was meant to be a prequel to the original Little Mermaid, and in the beginning of TLM, we find Ariel exploring a sunken ship, skipping a concert she was meant to sing in. In Ariel's Beginning, they show her being in love with music and it seemed like nothing else. It just seemed awfully dull and also very predictable.
Flounder and Sebastion seemed out of character an awful lot to me. Sebastion disobeying King Triton's laws? Really? And Flounder seemed very daring and adventurous, when in the original movie, he's considered a scared little guppy!
There's something about the animation used in all of the Disney sequels. It just looks very sloppily put together to me. The original movie was SO much more detailed, and it looked like the people working on it actually cared. There was also a disappointing lack of bubbles, I noticed.
I'm so sorry, this is not meant to offend anyone at all. I'm simply expressing my opinion, and as I have stated before, I am a firm supporter of the originals and am against sequels. The only sequels that I have liked and am glad was made was Toy Story II. All of the others upset me because they do not compliment the originals at all.
Everyone is to their own opinion though, right? So, those who enjoyed this movie, I respect that and won't debate things about it. Just saying that I did not like it. Right after watching it I popped in TLM and it was quite refreshing to see the detail and care put into that movie. I realized that I don't sing along to the songs from TLM2 or Ariel's Beginning, they just didn't hold that same spark.
I apologize again, there's just so much more I want to say and talk about, but I promise I'm finished now. *deep breath*

I think all of the characters are at their best in the original Little Mermaid movie. I don't know, I'm like a grumpy old person stuck in the past or something. I'm just really stubborn when it comes to sequels. To me, it just seems like in TLM2, the characters are different. And I know they're meant to be, since Ariel's older as well as Flounder etc... but I guess II prefer to just keep the characters in their original form, because it's, to me, when they're the most vibrant and alive! *shrugs* I have yet to see TLM3, so I can't really say anything about that, but I still feel like I'll much prefer the original to anything. Even the series is different. I just like the characters exactly how I was introduced to them. Hm, I sound like such a stubborn, close minded person. I'm really not! That's just my opinion is all.

I never really watched the series too much. I watched the episodes more so when I was younger, but that makes it harder to remember them. :( But there are a few that stand out in my mind. Like Stormy, Giggles, Wish Upon a Starfish, Double Bubble... and yeah. I think I'd have to go with Stormy. I really liked that seahorse.

Hm yeah, I also noticed how not just Ariel, but as Random mentioned, Sebastion and also Flounder change. It bothers me a bit because I'm so used to how they all look in the original movie, then when they change through out the seasons of the series it throws me off and it's also all I can concentrate on. haha Maybe that's just me being weird though. Ariel's personality seems a bit different in some ways through out the series as well to me.
